New Patek Philippe Nautilus vs. Pre Owned
Let me preface my question by saying, like all of you I absolutely love watches. I am also 26. I don't have a lot of extra money but whenever I do I save it to purchase the "next watch". I have built a nice little collection through the years. I have always wanted a Patek but have never been able to pull it off. I started really trying to figure out how to get one recently because I am obsessed with Pateks! I think I may have figure out how to get one with some trades and cash. Having said all of that, here is my question:
Keeping in my that I am looking for the absolute best value, is it better to buy a new Nautilus 5711-1A, white. Or is it a better value to get a used one? I'm asking because I know that the price of Pateks just go up. So is waiting for a pre owned one in hopes of saving some money smart or will they just end up costing more as time goes on? Thanks for all of the advice in advance. And, if any of you have any 5711-1As, Aquanauts, 5035s or travel times that you are looking to get rid of please keep me in mind. |

preowned 5711/1a-011's are hard to come by since they just came out in 2012. Also Patek 2nd hands aren't like Rolex popular models where you see very competitive prices in 2nd hand markets. Keep in mind too that 5711 is SS, they're prone to scratches and dings, and these aren't so easy to inspect in photos. I would definitely go for brand new, as a matter of fact I just got a white 5711 a couple days ago, and I absolutely love it!

Seconded for David sw. Just took delivery today of a brand new 5711 from him with my name on the papers saving 15% on retail. Totally painless experience. Remember that a 5 year old watch will need a service by pp if you buy pre owned so unless you get a great deal it won't save you much at all going 2nd hand.

Btw mine was the blue dial. As mentioned next to no white dials going pre owned without paying more than retail.

be careful how old the watch is since the maintenance costs can be...well....staggering. i purchased a 3800 (full box and papers) and it was running about 7 seconds fast. Patek had no service history so required a full service. overhaul was $1,000 and was told the bearings were worn so it needed a new rotor. yes a whole new rotor, so another $1000. so at the end of the day, a watch that was running slighty fast incurred a $2,000+ repair.

your in arizona? so I assume you are going to Hamra correct?
I dislike hamra. I use to live in arizona and had some poor experiences there. The white is not as popular and ADs are more ready to offer discounts on it. Just a heads up Hamra really doesnt discount much. Mr Hamra hoards great vintage pieces in the back btw you should ask them to show you some :) |

However both white and blue models are made in such low numbers that their values will hold well so i wouldnt expect a huge difference in price on used between white and blue although I would expect white to be a bit less I hope this helps |

I prefer brand new, but if you can get pre owned with good condition then its not a bad idea.

Discounts on preowned 5711s (blue) arent great. I would just get a new one.
