Your Rolex and your writing instruments.

A fine Rolex timepiece must go hand in hand with a fine writing instrument. Let see them, guys. Many of you no doubt have some very nice pen collections as well. Here's my Boheme doue ballpoint with the GMTII. Also got a couple of more pens so more pics to come.

This is just an observation, not a criticism...but I often see fine watches related to fine pens. I never quite got it, and was wondering if it's a generational "thang." Pens have never interested me, though a space pen was once gifted to me. It was interesting in that it could supposedly write upside down and even underwater (I think).

However, as time moves forward, I find myself having to hardly ever use a pen. Even in stores where I need to sign the cc bill, it's now done on the screen with a pen tool, and my signature never comes out properly.

When I do find I need to use a real pen, I just use the closest one I can find. I don't really care.

But hey, very nice gold GMT there. I really do like those, and they are out of my reach for now.

Like my Rolexes, my Mont Blanc pens are prized because of their fine craftsmanship. Not sure how old you are, but you may fall under their spell later on.

Likely they will become obsolete. Though I'm sure they will become collectible antiques...

You could argue watches already are obsolete. How many people do you know who don't have a phone with the time on it? Never mind the fact that the time is everywhere and you could easily get by without a watch.

Pens will never become obsolete as long as people still enjoy writing with them. It's like saying books are obsolete because of the kindle. I know many people who can't stand the things and will always prefer to have a proper book in their hands.

I personally still use my pen all the time. I always will. There are certain things I will always write down. If you took my watch and my pen away from me for a week, I would start noticing the pen first. Whenever I'm out my phone is with me so the time is never far away.

One definition of obsolete is "no longer used" and I don't see that happening to pens in the lifetime of anyone on this forum.

You could argue watches are relatively obsolete, and generally they are for timekeeping, but they aren't obsolete as jewelry, and while a lot of folks have a hard time reconciling it, their watches are jewelry that tell the time. I guess you could wear your pen in your lapel and call it jewelry despite not really needing it for anything else while electronica becomes more prevalent...

I use a Fisher AG7 Space Pen and Kokuyo notebooks. Both have served me well for years and years and years.

I'm a video editor. Work a lot on computers. I do take notes once in a while, and I just use whatever pen is closest.

I never said I don't use them, just that it seems like I use them less and less these days.

Tend to agree.

I only use Monblanc and Faber Castell. Will try and get some pics posted up later. Using a fine pen or pencil is a joy.

Pens will not be going away....clearly not used though in the same way since computers have evolved. I think my 149 Mont Blanc is a good match for my Sub C.

I use a Lamy Safari, along with my Explorer I. I switched to using a fountain pen when I was an undergraduate - pages upon pages of note taking and writing exams would cause quite a bit of pain in my wrist. I heard that fountain pens require much less pressure to use, so I switched over and found the pain diminished. Stuck with it - although I never got into the expensive fountain pens. A $25 Lamy Safari coupled with a $10 bottle of Aurora Black is all I use.

That being said - a matte black Lamy Safari and an Explorer I are a perfect match for me, both very functional.

Sorry for the quick and poor 'phone pics, but here you go:

Everyday work combo. Sub, gold LeGrand pencil and platinum LeGrand ballpoint.

Bit smarter. Perigraph, Pinocchio ballpoint and Signature For Good pencil.

Dress-down. Speedy and Faber Castell eMotion pen and pencil.
