Elegant safes for Patek and expensive collections
Called USAA today to add my 5130R World Time onto my valuable personal property policy and was told that it will put my collection over the threshold ($150k) for requiring a safe and they will not insure me until I obtain a safe and send them photos and the make/model, serial no. of the safe. They also would not provide any recommendations or even tell me what type or level of safe I needed, just that my collection needs to be in a safe for continuation of my policy. So this brings me to my fellow Patek WIS buddies on here who find themselves in a similar position and wanted a recommendation on what you guys use? I don’t want some ugly safe and I really enjoy displaying my collection. Any recommendations on elegant safes would be appreciated!

My policy said my safe had to be over 150 Kg (330 lbs) for them to cover some sort of home insurance policy against theft/burglary.
Since you live in America, a gun safe would probably be a better option. Those are all well-above 150 kilos. If you want to go balls-out on a safe, buy a Buben & Zorweg. They do cost an arm and a leg. |

I can understand how weight is a parameter for insurance companies but do they give your brownie points if bolted to the floor?

Fort Knox is the best in the business here in the USA, IMO. You can customize it how you want it and the higher end ones are definitely show pieces. Certainly an investment and its not easy to upgrade if you need more, soo.. Build as much as your budget allows, you really only buy once anyway. |

First thing you need to speak to your insurers to see what they require.
In England they usually specify a safe with a cash rating value. eg, cash rating of £10000.00 = contents cover of £100000.00 (multiple of 10 x cash) I'm no expert on gun safes but I don't think that they have a cash rating value making the purchase pointless and would void your insurance. Also why would you want to install a gun safe that is designed for a 4 foot long shotgun / rifle etc when you can pick up a safe to suit your needs a quarter of that size. |

As above - the manufacturers will sell you a safe based on the insurance requirements (usually separate cash and contents value). Work from there.

Asking for a friend: Is it overkill to have more invested in the safe than the contents thereof?

USAA acted like I was the first person to ask for insurance for two precious metal Rolexes. I told the lady to check the policies of some of the Generals and get back to me. She finally insured them. We have over 100K in art, which was not a problem. We have about 80K in jewelry.

Near where I live there have been some nasty burglaries in the last year where the thieves beat up the wife until the husband opens the safe, certainly a good reason to not spec the safe with a time delay mechanism.

I'm another Brown Safe "Man Safe" owner. Half the price of a Buben with twice the utility, big fan of their product. https://www.brownsafe.com/man-safe/m...ange_6024.html is the one I bought, customized exactly the way I wanted for about $35k including delivery.
