Buying grey market

What is the threshold amount you would pay in the grey market over MSRP?

The amount I would pay on a watch would depend on which watch I wanted to buy. a black SS sub is not worth much if any over MSRP. Hulks and Batmans are going to cost more than MSRP and if I wanted to buy one right not I either decide to pay the premium or wait. Daytonas are always going to be way over MSRP so nothing you can do.

End of the day I will pay what I feel is an acceptable price for the watch based on how much I want it.

+1 but in my case I would round down.
Its a watch, no reason to pay over retail price offered by the manufacturer.

It really isn't. If I wanted to know the opinion of others well-versed in a subject, including whether and how much to pay over MSRP on the gray market, I might pose the question here myself.

Your response, though, isn't merely blunt; it's intentionally inhospitable. Do better.

That's a little rough. I think his question is totally valid. Would you rather wait up to and beyond a year or pay a premium to a grey seller. Many on this forum have asked themselves this same question.

No you’re not sorry or you wouldn’t have posted it.

I’m trying to think of one useful or constructive thing you have added to anyones threads and I’m coming up with a blank. I would be sorry about that.

Maybe this isn’t the right forum fo you to be on if you can’t restrain yourself from derogatory comments or show a modicum of social tact.

I think "blunt" and "stupid" should have been swapped.

To be fair, I think that's what OP was interested in seeing, how the wide variety of responses is distributed. Makes for an interesting poll.

The grey market's been around long before the stainless steel craze began. Something started it off, and it wasn't grey market dealers taking advantage of arbitrage.

True the grey market has been around a long time but it's evolved from where it started.

An AD is required to take many pieces they do not want to get the ones they can sell quickly or in demand. Back in the day, they sold many of the less desirable models at a nice discount to the grey dealers and would throw them in a few desirable pieces to take the others. The greys then sold them at around MSRP or below because they paid 30-40% under MSRP.

Today it's a different ballgame. The AD's are still off loading the lesser desirable pieces but now can charge a premium over MSRP for the hot models which in turn the greys mark up to what we see as "market" prices. Add in the demand worldwide has increased substantially for SS sport models and there you have it.

What you described is exactly the same ballgame; the standards simply rose.

In any case, it's flippers, jewelers, grey market dealers, casual hobbyists, etc. taking advantage of a price difference, with some barrier to entry. That's what arbitrage is, and what they're doing today is simply a different play-call to the same game that's existed longer than Rolex has even been around.

I was always anti grey, either getting discount or paying a premium as I wanted to support the local guy with his shop. However, in the current climate I would not hesitate to go grey, as I dont want to play games to get a watch. As for how much depends on how much I put a value on the piece. In principle i guess around 50%

Thank you to everyone that stood up for me with this question. It stemmed from a conversation, I had with the SA at the my AD and I thought it would be interesting to see the various responses.

You are less than 2 months old on TRF - you need to settle down and take it easy! You might not understand the question for its context but for this forum, its not a stupid question!
