When I bought my 1st Rolex...
It was 2003. A new Sub 16610. It was $3950. At the time I thought it was crazy expensive!

When I bought my first car, when I had my first job . . .
Not sure what you are asking other than inflation devalues money and causes prices to rise

Why do you assume inflation had anything to do with OP stating he thought it was crazy expensive at the time? Maybe that was a lot of money for him 17 years ago and now it's not. Your comment had no place in this thread other than to be divisive.

I never wanted one. Had zero interest.
One day in around 2005 a good customer spent a good bit of money with me and I looked at his Oyster as he called it, a Sub, and I thought.... hmmm. A couple of days later, with his money, I bought a used SeaDweller (hate the cyclops) for somewhere in the middle $3000 and it became my favorite watch. |

My first Rolex was actually a college graduation present, 2002 SS Datejust on oyster. I don't remember what my parents paid. Shortly there after I convinced my Dad to by a 116520 Daytona black dial after the AD contacted me and said the customer who ordered it backed out. He paid retail, $6,250 I believe.
The first Rolex I ever purchased myself was 2012, Explorer I and want to say it was $6,500.

Funny! I bought my first Rolex in 2003 as well! It was a Datejust for $3,450. I had just gotten my first bonus in a senior management level position and it was my gift to myself for it.

Wow, my story is almost exactly the same as yours. First Rolex was purchased in 2003, a 5-digit Submariner Date. But mine was a few years old, bought from an AD for $2600.

Bought a 14060 from an AD for either $2300 or 2800 (can't recall) in 1992. I had joined the Marines earlier that year. This watch gave me so many headaches I ended up trading it years later. I now regret that decision; I'd love to have my first Rolex.

Traded my father a Seiko for his non working (at least not correctly at the time) 1983 GMT master with a matte dial when I was around 16-17 years old. I still have it and still brings back a lot of memories as it was always on his wrist or around when I was little.

First purchased in May 2015 after turning 50 that March. Was on vacation in Vienna and checked out many shops. Finally settled on Bucherer and got a steel DJ II. I think after the tax credit I paid around $6k for it. Traded up a couple of years ago for a Black dial Explorer II.

Interesting post OP. I think relatively speaking the same watch now feels less painful to my pocketbook than it did back in 1989.
Come to think of it, saying I bought my first in 89 is what hurts |

First Rolex was a 116710LN bought here off DavidSW in 2012. I think it was around 7200.

Bought my first one in September of 2000 from a local AD. It was a 16610. MSRP was $3600. They gave it to me for $2800.

By June 2008 they were $5850. Back then I got -15% and paid $4972! They even let me put down a refundable deposit of $500 and let me think about it for a few days! Times have changed.

116710LN for me around Christmas 2010. I paid full retail but it was around $7k with tax. I had seen that watch in ads and billboards and lusted after it for two years. At the time I wore a $500 Hamilton, so $7k was a big leap.

16613 back in 1987. I think it was around $3000 new. You would think I would remember I saved up for it.

2002 TT GMT 16713 paid about £2800 with interest free credit. Still got it wore it everyday for about 15 years. Then part of rotation as I added to my collection. I’ve been wearing it the last few weeks whilst staying at home

I bought my first Rolex, a SS and Gold Datejust with a black dial back in 1990. I purchased it in Delaware (no sales tax). The price was $3,250. No sales tax was a huge bonus!!! I loved that watch but had to part with it due to unforeseen personal issues.
I got my second, and current, Rolex in November 2011, a 116710LN, at an AD for $7,900 and had it shipped out of state where the AD didn't have a store (to my brother's house). Free shipping and no sales tax. |

1995 14060 bought for £1290 GBP.
Wanted a decent dive and work watch and always had a thing for Rolex from being small and my father having one. Never been serviced and still running sweet. |

A SS DJ with the engine turned bezel and grey dial. Acrylic crystal. List was $595 new from an AD. Paid full price plus tax. Crazy expensive at the time. Early 1980's.

Great idea for a thread. I bought a meters first 5513 from here for $5000. Wasn’t even that long ago - 2013 - crazy how vintage prices have rocketed since then. Unfortunately not with me anymore, very bittersweet.
