Help on Rolex 1680 1977

Hi everyone.

I'm in contact with a reseller for purchasing a 1680 from 1977.
I'm waiting for more pictures and info. Right now I only have the images from the website.

What's your first reaction?

Thanks

I thought it was a service dial, but it should probably have a "swiss" or "swiss made" right?

No, not necessarily. Plenty of these 1680s have tritium service dials, which were used by RSCs till the late '90s.

In addition to the service parts, the watch has been polished quite a bit. Whether it's too much is subjective.

Hopefully the pictures he sends are detailed and not 'black and white'.

How on earth do these dealers produce these pictures? I see them a lot these days and they almost look like renders not real pictures.

Is there such a thing as pics being too good? I could never buy a watch off pics such as this, they just look odd to me and I’d wager the watch looks nothing like this in hand?

Personally I love the crispy white feeling, service dial or not...from appearance it’s just an amazing summer watch when it’s so crispy!!

Hello OP
Your first photo suggests that this 1680 dial has an "open 6" and the "L" is not exactly centered below the crown. This indicates that it is either a Mark 2 or a Mark 4 dial. The Mark 4 was the first service dial with Tritium. Yours is not a Mark 5 service dial with Superluminova because these have "SWISS" writing at the bottom.
Another characteristic is the "t" of "ft" which goes up at the bottom towards the "=". The Mark 1 and Mark 3 dials don't show that.
You need much much better photos!

The original dial was changed at some point - it now has a tritium service tritium. These service dials are easily discernible by the style of coronet found on the dial which wasn't used until the late 1980s through the 1990s.

I can't fathom why dealers provide these over-exposed Photoshopped pics that tell you so little about the characteristics of the watch. It feels like they're trying to hide something.

That's a deal breaker for me from the start. I'll go with somebody who provides clear and honest photos. If your photos aren't honest, what else isn't?

Edit: Oh, uncleluck already said this. Agree.

Hi everyone and thanks for your help. The seller (is a big german platform) doesn't share more pictures. I think I will give up.

Let it go buddy. His loss. I dont get people that sell like that. There are decent sellers here and outside the forum that will show clear pictures and give details when you ask for them.
