New Rolex explorer 124270

Hi everyone,

I am on the list to get the new Explorer with my local AD and got a chance to try on an exhibition model. When I first picked it up I thought it looked small and got a little worried. First impression on the wrist was very positive and the watch felt and looked very good on my 6.75 inch wrist.

For those of you who have owned or own this reference could you tell me what your impressions are?
Do you like the size, weight, balance, dial…etc

When I finally get the call I want to make the best and most informed decision possible. This is a lifetime watch for me and quite a lot of money. For reference my other piece is a Tudor BB58 Blue dial which I love and will never sell.

Any input (and pictures) is greatly appreciated. Thank you all so much!

Same wrist size as you. I’ve had mine for three weeks and haven’t taken it off. If you liked it in wrist, what’s holding you back?

Assuming that question was, in fact, for me, lol?

If so, I have a 5065. College graduation present from back in the day when dealers couldn't move these for anything. I find myself wearing my Rolexes more, but it's a very special watch to me for both horological and sentimental reasons.

That’s cool. Not to highjack this thread but that’s with the bracelet that’s not integrated right? I love that watch. Looks rustic.

When I graduated from clown school my parents just made me macaroni and cheese and Gordans fish sticks.

Explorer Explorer Explorer

Had to throw that in to stay on topic.

None of the Aquanaut watches ever had an integrated bracelet as far as I know. Perhaps you're thinking of the Nautilus? Mine has the composite ("Tropical") strap, which I think of as the signature Aquanaut strap.

Thanks for your reply!
Nothing is holding me back except the fact that it is a big investment for a watch and I want to make sure I’m making the right choice. Understated luxury, robust, right size..etc. I’m fairly new to the luxury watch game although I’ve loved watches all my life. Buying a watch at this price still has a little thing weird about it. I guess it’s like cars you get used to it…ahah.

I get it. Fortunately, if you were to acquire one and didn’t bond with it, the present state of the market would enable you to recover most of what you paid and possibly more.

Broo/ Dude.

Not sure bot cars scene in the states/ UK. From Singapore where cars like a E-Class 200 costing err USD177.7k today, drive for only 10yrs at max before its scrapped at erm 15k USD. Its like a 16k a yr loss pratically.
Its no wonder I am loving watches more nowadays.

I own this watch, and my wrist is about 7in. While this will never be as special as my Patek, I will say that it is perhaps the best feeling watch I've ever worn. The size is perfect (for my tastes, at least) and both the watch and bracelet feel solid as can be. Not super heavy, but a "dense" feeling watch, if that makes sense.

I've also come to appreciate the narrower, more tapered bracelet but for anyone who doesn't, the OP36 in black will probably feel much the same in other ways.

I have both the 36 and 39. I much prefer the 39 since my other watchers are 39-40mm. Size wise not much different on my 6.5” wrist but the dial is where it’s different. 39mm gives the illusion of a bigger dial.
The 36 is very good at being low key and the 39 is not as stealth. I tend to use the 36 only if i’m doing activities/house work since less of a chance to bang it.

Thank you for your reply, I thought of the 39 but can’t get myself to pay above MSRP for a watch. Low key is good, do you think it would work well in a more formal setting tho? (Business, wedding, etc..) thanks!

Both sizes work perfect in a formal setting. You can “dress up” just by putting on a leather strap. TBH the 39mm is probably the jack of all trades size. I only got the 36 because I got a call from my AD. It’s not getting that much wrist time

I have a 124270, my wrists are 6.5 inch and the fit is perfect. The watch wears a bit bigger than 36mm (actually a true 35.3mm) because of the lack of bezel.

Perhaps my only tip would be to make sure that the bracelet fits perfectly because I have found that even very small adjustments can make a difference as to how the watch sits on your wrist.

I haven't tried on the new version but I thought some of the older 36mm explorers felt a bit small and I have the same size wrist. I also think your first gut instinct counts in your decision, which you mentioned also being worried it being small.

Also I don't think this the right model to get if you're set on just getting one watch from an AD, which seems as you are at the moment. The exp1 used to be an entry level watch which you use to start a relationship in order to get hotter models from an AD. Now it's become a hot allocation piece in itself which I don't think is worth using your one watch for. So think about what you really want (that is obtainable) and work with your AD on that.

Personally I would love to get my daughter this watch but at the same time I don't want any of my ADs thinking they've done me this huge ass favor with just a 36mm watch, happy to wait until the market cools on this new model.

Thanks for your input, very useful. Perhaps it looked small after I tried the sub 41 and DD41 which looked too big for me… and a little too busy. Gorgeous watches tho.

It's an absolutely beautiful watch. My wife & I have one each in 2T. The amount of photos I see on here of oversized subs on smaller wrists would make me avoid taking onboard too many views on size here. It's a cracker of a watch, go for it! :)

Absolutely welcome pal. I wear a 14080M and I am also in the market for a couple of 2021 subs but you would need to be blind to miss the balanced beauty that is the 21 Explorer in either metal form. It is sublime.

I have no prior Explorer experience other than the 124270. It is a brilliant watch, very comofotable, classy and discrete. The proportions are fantastic and the build qulaity (especially the clasp) is outstanding. I would like to add the TT to the collection. It is a pleasure to ware and pairs very well in casual or more formal surroundings. The gloss dial provides a pop. Buy it!

Wrist size just under 7". Perfect watch and received far more compliments than my BLNR ever did (which is weird because I bought it to be more stealthy!). Lots of talk about the bracelet being too thin etc. Don't listen as it's from those who have never tried it on. The proportions are perfect - vintage look and feel and insanely comfortable on the wrist.

Good luck and enjoy the wait, it'll be worth it.

Thank you ! The bracelet was a concern at first as it tapers quite a lot and it’s hard to have an accurate feel when it’s not fitted to your wrist. I see you are not concerned about it which helps me :)

I replaced my old 114270 with the new 36. I could not be more satisfied. Perfect design, function, proportions, construction...its as good as an Explorer could be I'd say.

Same here. Had a 14270 and 114270 in the past and the 124270 is much better — as it should be :)

I think this ref is the true 1016 replacement.
