PAM 186 - Special Edition
Hi Guys...
This is a watch you do not see everyday... here she is.. one of my favourates and this is why.. because for me it represents a lot of soul.... and demonstrates Panerais's Engineering Might and its ability to cater for the best...... Mike Horn (a great South African modern day explorer, Chris must be pleased) started testing Panerai watches in 2001.. he planned a trip to treck the Antarktic and Panerai designed a special watch for him. it was AMAGNETIC where all the components would not get effected by the magnetic field and it also had special fluids as to operate on extream temperature.. Mike horn wore the watch during his trip and said at under -70deg C, all his sophisticated instruments froze on him with the exception to the Panerai ARKTOS. the Pam 92 ARKTOS was issued as limited edition of 500 in 2004.. after the first stage of the treck Mike asked for the watch to be modified to have the GMT function... Panerai then quickly modified the watch and sent it to him... hence the new special edition ARKTOS GMT PAM186 (special, not limited, only 500 were made too).. many ppl confuse the two watches (just like i did for a while)..... Here are the photos taken this afternoon of my beloved 186 with OEM Croc.. followed by a bit of Montana.. hope you like it... Here are some photos with the 233..... |

Beautiful!!!!
Would it be possible to get shot of the two of them on their sides next to each other? I am curious to see how much higher the 186 sits but that may indeed be a new must have for me! Is the fluid only in the back of the watch or is it through the entire watch like some of the oil filled diver watches. |

as of the fluid, i do not think it is totally filled like some dive watches but i do not really know. the watch is verythick and sits very proudly on the wrist. bearing in mind that 233 and 104 both are quite thibk since 233 is 1950 domed glass and 104 is automatic. here are the pix of the 186 compared thickness with the 233 and 104.. |

Great watch Zed and thanks for the history lesson, very cool information. The caseback on that watch looks amazing, your a lucky guy.
Just curious if you have noticed the prices on them rising due to the limited number produced?

well yes, the prices always go up in limited editions but some more than others depending on desirability and the avilability. some move better than others.. it is also difficult to gauge because you do not see them on the market that often. this particular one is not very well known because its history is not tied up with panerai's history unlike 127, 194, 203, 249, 262.. but it still seam to gain steadily... correction: i made a small mistake up there,, i ment to say the arctic not antarctic.. |
