TR, this is a timely post for me, as I've been thinking more and more about collecting vintage Subs. Thanks!
Did you get any photos of the shops and watches? Cheers, Chris

Hello,
Let's clear the air.... Both Indonesia and Thailand are developing countries.... I know dealers from both countries..... UNLESS YOU ARE AN ABSOLUTE EXPERT - repeat EXPERT on vintage Rolex.... you need to be extra extra careful when buying Vintage Rolex.... The laws in both countries make it impossible to seek legal restitution...... There are heaps heaps heaps - of converted/bodgy vintage rolex watches over there.... All sorts of tricks you would not even begin to understand! Real movement - fake case real dial - fake /wrong movement The list is very very long...... Please trust me on this..... I am very knowledgeable on vintage.... I have seen most things...... I have nothing against Indonesia or its lady folk...... but buying vintage Rolex.... YIKES .... that is another story.... |

Plausible. When was the last time you were in Indonesia? (I was there last year). And while you were there, have you examined those watches?

Fake timepieces can be found almost in every country, but the size of the market is different in each countries. Indonesia have large market for this dodgy business no doubt about that, but there is a fine line dividing real and fake market and who's buying which. There is a fine line dividing AD and reputable grey dealer and dodgy street vendor selling cheap knockoffs. Hey, we not even supposed to discussed about knockoffs in this forum. If you still feel that way, thats perfectly fine and understandable, but why don't you keep it to yourself?! Maybe same goes with your luxury secondhand purse list |

Archie, stay in Australia where it's safe. Don't go out. Watch out for funnelwebs, and drop bears too. Scary world out there. You've seen it all. Leave us be. We don't know what we're getting ourselves into.
Oooh. Risk. Danger. I love it. |

If you really want to buy one of their vintage, you can ask 'em to open the caseback and you can look the movement. If fake (), you can cancel the deal. |

I happen to travel around the region quite a fair bit and jakarta is a frequent spot for me.
Although this thread is many years old, i thought i would update it a bit. Vintage is pretty tough to find in Jakarta nowadays. It has been bought up by many of my rich chinese indo friends. They have a club where they gather to have dinners and appreciate each others collection. These are million dollar collections acquired from around the world not just locally. As for preown stuff, Blok M plaza has quite a handful of shops, maybe 10? Regular 5 digit to current 6 digit and even alphanumeric references available. Really not too many true vintages around nowadays. Only saw 3 on my last trip there, couple of days ago. I was also in Tokyo last month, visiting several vintage preowned watch shops in nagano and ueno. Prices are decent , bot cheap but the Japanese are really perfectionists and the shops do a really good job refurbishing the preowned watches. Jpy is also quite soft lately, perhaps that adds to the attractiveness of buying in Japan. Enjoy |
