It’s a thing of beauty that 11r, I just wouldn’t have enough places to wear it.
Btw, I see you with the salmon 5270. You have the wrist for it and tend to buy some of the classic complication pieces. Not that you asked |

I'd part with the 5711/1r first.

3940 will have to go. Deemed small for the current times.
The ideal 3 Patek combo for me would be 1 Nautilus, 1 Aquanaut and 1 Calatrava. In terms of complications, 1 3-hand time only, 1 for travel and 1 Perpetual grand complication. In effect, I would choose a 5711 1/a or r, 5164 a or r, and a 5140g or r. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

5170 doesn’t make it. 5711 is a classic - I’m not the biggest fan in SS as it becomes a little ‘meh’ for my liking. But in gold, it’s striking, and probably the only yellow gold watch I would buy. The 5712 is the most beautiful watch I’ve ever seen. I nearly bought one, but went 5990 instead as it’s more ‘me’ than the 5712, but it’s an incredible watch and I still want to add one. The 3940 is not my kind of watch and at first glance, it doesn’t make it. But...it has a perpetual calendar and that means it’s a winner. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Pick 3 of these 4 for your Patek collection
Seems like there is not a lot of love for the 3940. The move clearly seems to be towards sporty watches these days. I just love that watch and would love to pick up a 3940
Of the watches listed I would let the 5711 go...reluctantly and only if I found something which sang to me more Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

i would let go the 5170p, as i don't like stone hour markers, or the 5712 because of the dial.

3940 would go, I hate setting perpetual calendars too finicky... And yes you can wear without setting it but I can't stand unset watches.
I think the 5711 + 5712 + 5170 makes a nice dress/sport combo and also gives you Gold/White metal combinations. |

I will probably boot out the 3940P. It doesn't have the wrist presence of the 5170P/5711-R and not as practical / versatile as the SS 5712A.

I'd send the 5712 out to pasture.

I would get rid of the diamond-dialled Chrono.

I’m a bit surprised about the disdain for the 3940. It’s the perfect dress watch, and a true classic.

I agree here. I love the 3940. Classic Patek and as stated above the one that is just done “right”. There isn’t any wrong answer here, but I would personally move one of the Nautilus. Whichever you wear less. I would keep the 5712, but that’s just me. I like the 240 movement and the blue dial. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Thanks everyone for your feedback. A few members have had (many) long conversations with me about this; you know who you are and .
In trying to maintain some discipline in this crazy hobby, I would like to sell one of these four watches. One other that was suggested to be sold was my Platona, which is not going to happen. Granted it’s not the haute horology of the others, but that would be very hard to do. I understand the rationale (the ceramic SS covers the Daytona “need” at a fraction of the price), but the blue dial, brown accents, and heft of the platinum are just fantastic. And it is my only PM Rolex. No final decision has been made yet. There have been several times when I thought I decided only to realize that each is perfect or special to me in its own way. Thanks again.

If one must go, I suggest the 3940p because :
1- out of the 4, 2 are platinum so platinum need is covered 2- having 1 steel, 1 RG, 1 platinum patek is a dream team 3- the 5712 is untouchable IMHO, the best steel watch out there if not the best watch period. 4- the 5711rg, despite having nautilus shape, but very different watch with the brown dial and rose gold color, I believe it is your only colored watch, very elegant and dressy. It should stay 5- between the 2 platinum watches, I prefer the look of the 5170p. I love manual wind movement and that dial is astonishing. The baguette hour markers for me are a plus. The only let down of the 5170p is that it overlaps with the platona 6- the 3940p, despite beautiful watch, is not as beautiful as the 5170p, and I think it has 240 movement which is already in the 5712 and it is not as beautiful nor sophisticated as the 5170p movement. The PC complication will be lost I understand but honestly I am not big fan of PC or pcc in large collection as they are pain to maintain and adjust. So despite nice to have but I don't give heavy marks on this complication. Lastly, the silver dial of the 3940 is the least appealing to me among the 4 dials. Having said all the above, I would let the 3940 go unless you can keep all. Good luck with your choice |

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. My biggest hurdle in selling the quintessential, understated, and classic Patek 3940p is that it is such a great daily for the office. And as beautiful as the 5711/1r is, it’s a watch that will be worn largely on special occasions only. I can make a case for keeping all as they are all so different as well as for why each one “could” go. No decisions made yet, however.

If I had to pick one of those to let go, it would be the 5711/r only because your 5712 checks the Nautilus block. I also prefer a PM Rolex Sub to the RG 5711. Also, all of your PP collection is the same color. Now if you had the unicorn 5711P, then the 5712 would have to go!

For me the gold nautilus no question. My preference is dress pieces and complications. I’d never get rid of the 5170p or the 3940p, like ever. I’m not the biggest nautilus fan, but if I were to get one it’s be the 5712 since I’m a sucker for a moonphase with surrounding date pointer.

With the 5711r gone, the other three would be the same color.
