I have big wrists. I wear nothing smaller than a 40mm case. I went with a DJII, because of the oyster bracelet and 41mm case size. I also have a BLNR Ceramic, and a new reference Air-King. I have the wrists to make big watches look good.
I am saving, and fortunately I am not loving the dial selection available as of late, however one year, a dial may pop that requires me to pull the trigger. Obviously DD40 is what is available now, but what if a second hand DD II comes into the fray? Aside from my taste in Big watches, what are some of the other reasons making the DD40, a more or less appealing watch over the DDII to folks? Referring to the ceramic link pins. Rolex is not using PM screws/ pins on the new DD40s? Is this true? Besides the obvious 3255 calibre movement enhancements, what are other changes between the DDII and DD40? Look I get it, Rolex discontinued both the DJ II and DD II for a reason, but other than the case size and slight proportion adjustments, what really is different? Just trying to educate myself to make the best decision. |

I have both dd40 in rose with olive and I feel it’s is much more formal then my Yg ddII. I would never sell my 41 and feel I would move the 40 before the 41. When I go out and Im wearing casual it’s the 41. If I wear a suit or something a bit more formal I’ll throw on the 40.

When I was looking at a the DateJust, I was just sold on the Arabic Rhodium Dial, and the fact it came with an Oyster Bracelet. Not realizing it at the time, I did not know that prior to the DJII, the largest case was 36mm. Even though the Aabic rhodium was avaialble in 36, I was set on the larger 41mm.
Seems the DDII also created the jump which allowed for the larger case. And similar to the DJII evolving into the DJ41, so did the DDII into the DD40. |

I am never sure what people refer to as the DDII is out of proportion. I always ask, by which measure is it out of proportion. I think the DDII is the watch of its time period. Watches were growing. The DDII and the DJII had fewer dial choices compared to the current catalog pieces. If choosing between the DDII and the DD40 I would compare metals, and dial configurations and then decide, The DD40 measures just under 40mm so 39.8 approx. If I had a larger wrist, or just want more presence on the wrist I would take the DDII. Certainly can't go wrong with the current piece, because it's more classically sized. I also like the dial updates in the DD40.

In the DDII, only the platinum version had the ceramic inserts for the bracelet links (pins might have a bad word choice). The screws for the adjustable links are certainly pm matching the metal of the watch

I like them both but used this logic above to make my decision. Plus the DDII are older now and IMO all coming up on service intervals.

I have reviewed dial catalog pages going back to 2013, and it is true. There were not many dial options, for either DDII or DJII, and when I chose my DJII, I wanted the dial. I mentioned above that the dial I liked was also available in 36mm, but I wanted a larger case. This was the only option. Seems that the DDII was discontinued around 2015, about a year or so earlier than the DJII. Everything is going to run an evolution, and the current DJ and DD sizes are a direct result of case size increases and modifications. Now, I need to save for that one DD40 that appears in the future, which has a dial and metal configuration appealing to me. |

To my eye I really see little difference. Quite a stir made of little change, imho.

I would definitely go with the DD40. I think it strikes the perfect balance, plus, in my opinion, is truer to the classic rolex design.

I have larger wrists due to my size so I prefer the DDII, but I love the mechanics and attention to detail of the 40

Ready for another...
There was also a DD Special Edition in 39mm and 36mm. Some very attractive dials in this venue. I count 57 different types in the 2013 catalog, I don't think I can post all but will try. |

As demonstrated by the replies in this thread, there’s no shortage of people willing to dunk on the DDII. I’m not sure why it evokes this kind of response, although I am biased. I bought a YG DDII 5 years ago, and chose it over the DD40, because for me, I simply liked it better. Like many of the questions asked on these forums, there is no wrong answer, it’s just a matter of your own taste.
