From a purely aesthetic point of view, I usually grab one of my EXP2's when I'm venturing into what some might call 'rugged' conditions. (See attached "sandy" pic lol). But any of them would do just fine.

Side note: I wore a DJ for almost 10 years (before discovering TRF ofc) and did absolutely any and everything with that thing. Put it through hell and beyond and it still looked like a million bucks every time I put it on.

So...yeah. If rugged is what you seek, you've come to the right place.

I like the Explorer II as the answer to this case, mostly for the fixed and brushed bezel that will survive more battle scars compared with others in the modern lineup. I will say that any Submariner, modern or vintage, can hold its own and the plexi versions can be cleaned up with a little Polywatch or toothpaste.

Otherwise, I've beat up all of my Rolex watches and I've never had anything too worrisome happen to them. Probably my biggest regret was doing a big plumbing job with my newest Sub Date (installing new faucets/drains in a confined area under granite countertops), which resulted in a LOT of big scratches on the bracelet. Oh well, that's what happens to watches that are worn in all conditions!

Any Explorer I would be rugged. The Explorer II bezel would make that model more rugged than any Rolex with a ceramic bezel.

This makes it even worse than the sub. Fragile watch (except you can scratch it all you want and won't look any different)

I think a simpler movement will be more rugged/durable, and newer movements all have equal shock protection. No date or GMT complication so 2 less things to "break" than an Explorer II.

Also ridiculously simple design with less things to pop off or get damaged. Finally 36mm reduces the chances of knocking the watch against something while wearing.

In that case I nominate the 26mm 67230 and the 28mm Tudor Lady-Sub (with 200m depth rating which is double any non-diver Rolex)

I'd vote for Exp II, as I did manage to pop my subs bezel off just cleaning the exterior of my boat 2 yrs ago. Somehow, the watch/bezel caught the edge of a cleat and off it popped - was surprised to say the least. Luckily, I found the bezel on the deck (pretty much unharmed), but the washer and bezel click spring were nowhere to be found. I bought spare parts and re-assembled it. so, yes, it does happen.

Got to balance against legibility, a big dialed 36mm watch like the Exp I is my personal sweet spot, but YMMV.

If my wrist was larger I’d be all over this latest version on the ExpII. I think it’s magnificent but it looks like it’s wearing me on wrist. ( not my photo)

As such I prefer the modern smaller explorer which I think is a prefect modern field watch …. And my most worn daily.

Anything with a rotating bezel will be less rugged or tough than a fixed bezel. That is a fact.
Anything ceramic will automatically be less tough than something in steel. That is a fact as well. Ceramic is very hard and extremely scratch resistant, but it is inherently brittle. No way around that.
Afterwards it will be esthetics. For me, anything with polished steel like the DJ or explorer I, seems to show dings and scratches more.
I think the movements inside are all very shock resistant and durable.
So something brushed would seem better for me. Let’s see… like the Explorer II ��. I would like to have it fully brushed like the Pélagos even.

Call me crazy, but I think dings/scratches on the Exp II bezel look awesome, like the watch was worn for its "purpose". Whereas if I see a Day Date all scratched up, I just think the owner was careless, haha.
