Question about appearance.....

New member here and purchased my first Rolex, OP36 11000 with the Steel Dial. My question is this....

I work in Sales at a car dealership and a few of my colleagues feel it is a bad idea to wear such a watch when working with potential buyers. They say it comes off as looking like I "make too much money" and the customers will decide they should purchase elsewhere. Our dealership dress code is slacks and polo's so we are somewhat casual, but there are days when I decide to wear a coat and tie as well. I wear this for myself, not to try and impress others, Heck, I'm pushing 50 I don't need to impress anyone. But it makes me feel good. I wear other watches, TAG Aquaracer's, Tudor BB41, Movado's and never heard anything from my colleagues about them. And I am the Old Guy here.

So I ask for your opinions, would you as a customer be put off by a SA wearing a watch like this? Do you think non watch enthusiasts would even really notice this low key variant of the Oyster Perpetual line?

I had a new car store for several years and many of my guys wore Rolex watches. Honestly only watch people care 99% never even notice. They just want a car

I have owned various Rolex and other fine watches for over 30 years. Trust me when I say almost nobody will notice your watch. Wear and enjoy it.

I don't have issues with it as the price of the goods is the same regardless what's on your wrist.

Firstly, not everyone is a watch fanatic or rather a watch guru.. A few people might see it on your wrist and literally not know the worth but if eventually anyone knows, i don't see it as a repellant. If He/She really wants to patronize you they would. They definitely came to your shop for a particular reason and hell wouldn't leave your shop because you putting on an expensive piece. Probably you'd use that as an avenue to familiarize yourself with your customer. Use that as an opportunity to strike a conversation and go with the flow.

I can't even imagine buying a car based on the watch a salesman wears, not that I don't notice such things.

I bought three cars from a salesman at a local dealer over the course of a few years. He wore a TAG, which at the time I thought was haute horlogerie.

I bought cars from him because he was honest and straightforward and never steered me wrong with regard to the cars I bought.

Wouldn't worry about it. Nobody is going to notice what it is and anyone who does notice won't care as they'll probably be watch enthusiasts themselves and therefore are unlikely to think negatively of you! I bet if your colleagues didn't know what brand name was on the dial then they never would have suggested that you don't wear it. Wear your watch and enjoy it sir.

If I noticed a car SA with this watch, I’d make the assumption they are good at their job and make a lot of sales. I wouldn’t view it as a negative at all. Looks good on you, wear it!

Funny, this is exactly how it is. It seems to be the same group that hover at the bottom of the sales board waiting for things to come to them, and complain at the end of the month. While those of us who actually work hard, put in the time energy and effort, reap the benefits of our work.

I’d say wear your watch. But to be fair and call myself out, I once noticed a waiter at Nikki Beach in St. Tropez wearing a new white gold Daytona (blue dial).

In that moment, I thought, wow. This place is grossly overpriced but I’m having a blast and I think I want to apply for a job

You are over thinking it - majority of people never notice. Even if they do it's a classy piece that doesn't draw any negative connotation. You are allowed to be successful in your line of work regardless of what it is - I personally would prefer to deal with a successful SA believing that their customer service and follow through helps generate that success.
