This. My mom used to own a 26mm DJ, same font style as OP's pictures. Enjoy your new found Date-Just!

Well it sounds like the experts think it's a 43 year old watch, and since it's so beat up looks like it's been worn most of that time! So I'm guessing a senior citizen (bought it when they were in their 40's so in their mid-to-late 80's now) was wearing it, and perhaps took it off and set it down to wash their hands or put on lotion or try on a new watch or something and just forgot it. My dad left all sorts of things lying around town when he was that age...

Take it to a Rolex Service Center and if the owner reported it stolen, it will get returned to them. If not, then hope your girlfriend enjoys a free watch with a lot of history.

My girl was working in a Rolex store, found the watch and handed it in. It was unclaimed, so she's now got a shiny Rolex! However, we're having trouble identifying and/or valuing the watch. Have looked on the Rolex website and it seems to be some sort of DateJust, but we can't find anything on there that is exactly the same.

Seems to have diamonds on the numbers. Have attached some pics.
Yup. You answered your own question...

It's some sort of DateJust.

This looks like a fake. The date font appears to be off.

Could the owner be traced, by Rolex, using the number that's engraved on the watch head (concealed by the bracelet)?

I just feel bad for the person who lost their Rolex. I'm sure it had a lot of meaning to them from years of wearing it.

Datewheel is correct for that reference - the font is quite different to what is usually seen due to the numerals being very small.

The watch looks correct for its reference and likely age.

Looks like a copy from Shanghai, Beijing or Hong Kong to me.

The whole story is also suspect to me.

These “I found a Rolex” posts are so frustrating. You didn’t find it, there was no treasure map, you stumbled upon an item someone misplaced or lost. You didn’t get lucky finding it, it’s not the lottery.

The only lucky person would be the rightful owner once his possession is returned to them.

If you want a Rolex or anything in life for that matter you work and save up for it just like everyone else. It has a serial number, with this age it’s probably been serviced and there is some record of it. Do the right thing, put in the leg work and return it.

I think there should be writing on the case back. The older 26mm DJ's are odd like that.

It's not paranoid. It's skepticism, based on the details you've provided, that your story is true.

If I'm wrong, I'll be the first to admit it. But, the vast majority of these 'oh, look I found a rolex' stories are purely made up.

It's a wild ride.

She hasn't had the time to go in yet due to some personal issues, will keep y'all posted when she does!
