Curious what grade Titanium in Panerai watches

I know they allude to using grade 5 somewhere on their website but I am not sure if that was for every model? What do the submersibles use?

The PAM 389’s case is made from grade 5 titanium, which not only keeps the weight of this 47mm leviathan reasonable, but also extremely strong and highly corrosion-resistant.

Wow, hugely dissappointing. That being the case, I would bet the majority are as well.

I contacted Panerai out of curiosity and the agent stated clearly that "all" brushed titanium Panerai watches are grade 2....all polished titanium is grade 5.
I also asked regarding the 1305 and 1389...they stated "since they are both brushed titanium, they are both grade 2".

Seems the only benefit from my research between the two is 5 is harder more scratch resistant and can be polished like steel, while two is a bit softer and cannot be polished, 2 is marginally darker possibly more prone to dings but "heals" scratches/scuffs away.
I would have preferred grade 5.

Much to do about nothing in my opinion. I actually dive with my 1305 and 1389 and they have been banged on boats and at the bar after diving. The watches look juuuuuust fine.

I agree with this but here's an article with Angelo Bonati stating this:

"So about the quality of the material – we use grade 5 titanium. Normally we use two kinds of titanium, the grade 2 and grade 5. Grade 1 is not really good in terms of quality, but two is nice. Grade 5 is better, because of its corrosion resistance properties."

Thanks for posting that. It’s clear grade 5 is better overall although grade 2 doesn’t give up much. The difference is akin to 316 vs 316L, given the choice I’d take the 316L.
It won’t effect my purchasing of the 1305 especially when there isn’t an option. It’s just good to know the tech details of the item you’re purchasing.

It's ok because it doesn't have a screw down crown.

If it did, I would pass.

Gr 2 is awful for crowns

The Tudor Pelagos is apparently Grade 2 Titanium and it does a pretty good job of water resistance with the screw down crown.

My titanium bicycles have either been Grade 9 (3Al/2.5v) or Grade 5 (6Al/4v) ....but they never kept good time. These are titanium alloys used for commercial purposes.

I had a Breitling Seawolf TI 3000m made in grade 2 and the crown stripped out 2X. Breitling wouldn't cover it. Got rid of it.

I owned 2x Pelagos (Black and Blue). Always felt the crown action was gritty and rough. it never stripped out, but I didn't care for them and moved on.

Interesting info, glad you shared your experience. Haven’t ever heard this before so might be isolated but still good to know.

It was a prevalent issue on the Seawolves...so bad they switched to steel.

Googilize it and you will see multiple references made to the failures..

Breitling are using titanium again in their bandit reference, but not sure if that is grade 5 now ...

Once I hear grade 2 and watch has a screw down crown? Pass.
