Personal preference

Guys and ladies: Since inventories are so thin, and the new models don’t do much for me I have the urge to buy something vintage for a change. Maybe a birth year piece. It’ll be an OP, Or a Datejust, and I was wondering what your favorite references are, and what you think is the most attractive bezel? I’m looking at spending $5-6k.

How about a DJ that doesn’t look like every other DJ in the world?? Perhaps engine-turned bezel and/or tapestry dial? Something a little more unique?

How about a 5 digit explorer 2? They were going for your specified price just a few months ago but not so much anymore.

You’re welcome. Please do a LOT of research first. And perhaps one of the trusted TRF resellers can assist you in finding something special. Good luck.... and keep us posted.

A birth year piece will really limit you on any specific choice. You could find an Expll in your price range, probably no papers if that means anything to you. Plenty of nice DJs available too. I had a SS DJ36 on brushed oyster with an engine turned bezel, that was a favorite of mine.

I love the painted numeral dial Datejusts, also known as Buckley dials. They came in four digit and five digit references with engine turned, fluted and smooth bezels, on jubilee and oyster bracelets. Relatively rare and have a real classic dress watch look to them.

I know others are fans of the wide-boy dials with the wider applied hour markers.

The onyx dial and other stone dial Datejusts are beautiful too, but are probably outside the price range you’re looking at.

Search for these on the forum or Google to see photos of these variations to the classic Datejust.

The older Datejust 1601,1603 perhaps with rarer dauphine handset, pie pan dial, coin bezel will be good choice. These are generally from late 50s or early 60s era ...
