Pretty sure you’re correct (at least for the early ones), but most have been changed at some point during service. My understanding is that the teeth on them get worn down after a while.

The Mark6 red sub was the last of the red 1680’s before the 1680 changed over to the white writing and you see the white date wheels. Mark5 Reds and earlier should be silver date-wheels, Mark6 can be a bit of a transition.

Original owner. I even have all the service records. Its a working watch, just retired it from every day service. You’re not going to like this, but every decade or so it goes to a RSC, twice to dallas, 3 times to new york ( including this year). The dial is original, not the hands (I had to tell time in dark conditions), the bezel (probably the 3rd one), nor the crystal, 4 th one. Other things I remember is the crown. As to the date wheel, I don’t remember it off hand, but if its unusual for this year, most likely RSC swapped it out at some point. I can look if its important to you.

Just sounds like a well maintained watch to me. Very nice indeed mate!

Wow! Original owner, love that! So tell us where and when you acquired the watch and what drew your interest in it? Still have the original box papers and receipt? (It’s just not common to hear from an original owner)

When my parents gave up trying to convince me I couldn’t make a living pretending to be Mike Bridges in Sea Hunt, they gave me this watch. I have the box and papers and all service records but no receipt. My Dad told me later that he had only two choices, a Seiko and this one. He was in the 1st Marines in WWII, so the Swiss watch won. There apparently wasn’t much price difference. This was in Tallahassee in 1972. The serial number makes it 1969, so I assume it sat in the shop. I don’t think they bought it used.
The original bracelet was destroyed about 1979, as in pieces of it are still on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. Being stupid I bought another one from Rolex and it made it about 5 years. I put it in the box and started using straps, when I discovered NATOs life got better.
Through the 70s almost everyone I dove with wore these. There were a few Seikos but I only remember one Omega. This has sat on my wrist 24 hours a day for what? Almost 50 years now, and it has been seriously abused in its life. It has never ever failed. A magnificent tool, near perfect in both form and function.

This is soooooo pretty! Please tell us the story of how you came upon it??

Have you used Polywatch yet on the crystal? Would love to see the dial after the crystal has been cleaned up. And what an INSERT!

Sorry for hijacking, does this mean all 1680 whites have white date wheels? My 5.8m has it in silver.

Sorry for the confusion....No, I didn’t mean that you wouldn’t see silver date wheels on 1680 whites, but that you will begin to see the white date wheels used by Rolex in the 1680 white’s. A red 1680 should have a silver date wheel
