I need to buy a cane...

I broke my hip a month ago and have been using a walker to get around since. I am about to ditch the walker and just use a cane. I have a basic offset handle aluminum black cane, but it sure is boring. My physical therapist recommended it for now and I will use it.

However, if I'm going to have to use a cane for a while, I would like to get something with a little more style.

Cruising the internet, there are some pretty interesting canes out there. Anyone use a fancy type cane? Pros and cons? Pictures?

I would suggest something vintage. There’s some very unique and stately pieces out there and what better way to get attention off you needing a cane than having a really cool conversation piece? Just make sure you know the length you need and the handle position you prefer.

Any cane is good as long as it works.

I once used a cane for a few days when I pinched my sciatica nerve doing exercise without warming up. The pain was mind numbing and every step was excruciating.

and I had a flight the next day so I had to bring my grandpa’s cane. I had to walk entire length of the terminal. Good thing I had my assistant with me to put my arm around and help carry my weight.

It was eventually fixed by a physical therapist but that cane got me through the trip.

Vintage would be classy. We had a Victorian ivory handled one I used to great comic effect as a kid. Interesting timing your post, I’ve had pretty bad pain in my right hip on and off for months now but it’s got worse recently leading to a couple of sleepless nights...to nervous to venture into a hospital with Covid around. I’m trying to walk at work without looking like I’m limping. Stupid I know, ought to get to a Dr.

Of course it is!! I see you decided on the upgraded blue finish and optioned the ole girl out with the fancy accessory pouch and that very stylish arm extender apparatus. The contrast of the silver and blue is timeless yet mesmerizing. The only thing that appears to be missing is the tennis balls on the back!

I used a quad cane for a while, which is the opposite of stylish and I thought looked ridiculous for a relatively young man. But it worked for me. Go with the mobility aid that really works for you, regardless of style, IMO. I hope you’re recovered soon.

Went though this with my spouse a few years back when she had a leg injury.

My recollections that the following factors are important.

1. Make sure and get a correct height measurement so that you don't have to bend to use it or conversely have your grip too high.

2. The can should be sturdy enough to carry your weight, but light enough so it is not a burden.

3. Give consideration to what is on the end of the cain. A bare end looks great, but it is more prone to slip and dig into soft surfaces like grass. We wound up putting a rubber tip cover on all canes. But remember, the rubber tip cover adds length (see 1 above).

3. Last, it should be something you like, or you won't use it. Try to find one that fits your personality and your intended use. We wound up getting one for her to wear to court and one to wear walking in the woods. The latter was a dowel we got from Lowes.

Good luck my friend. Speedy recovery and stay safe but stay as active as you can.

Some options to consider

1) dress like Willy Wonka and hand out candy to everyone all the while maintaining a witty borderline pompous demeanor.

2) dress like a pharaoh and hire some college kids to carry you everywhere on a solid gold chair

3) Walk on your hands instead, one would imagine it’s an incredible upper body workout

4) Maintain a blood alcohol content somewhere between Super Bowl Sunday and wake up on the bathroom floor and just walk off the rust like Forest gump with the leg braces.

5) go to a nursing home and challenge the first person you see with a cane to a duel. If you win, the cane is now your chattel. Thems the rules.

I had a major knee injury last year which required me to use crutches, and then a cane for almost 6 months. Having tried many options, I have found the European style "fore-arm crutch" to be the absolute best in terms of stability and usability. The tradition style canes don't provide much support I find, as they are prone to slipping and rely solely on your hand/wrist to carry your weight. These however, allow you to recruit the entire strength of your arm, and it's grip design allows for it to act almost as an extension of your arm. It doesn't look the best to be honest, as I feel there is a stigma that this sort of crutch makes you look like a cripple? But personally, having needed it for half a year to walk, It was extremely helpful and I believe that when it comes to assisting your mobility, function over fashion is of utmost importance. Get well soon!
