Hi,
Are there any pro's / con's with having my watches passed through a degauss coil? My nightly watch resting spot has proved to be subject to some mag fields (45deg deflect on N), with may be the cause of some recently noticed inaccuracy (+10secs day, after being good). Lastly, is it normal for a watch to twitch a compass needle, when in close proximity ? Thanks ![]() |

Normally the first sign of a watch becoming temporally magnetised it will run very very erratic.Normally speeding up by minutes and not a few seconds, or even coming to a complete stop, but a simple task to remedy if its really magnetised which I doubt.

I am currently looking for a degauss coil myself to demagnetize some tools and other things. One thing I was warned about was the hairspring. I have read about hairsprings which are no hairsprings afterwards. I would love to hear from a pro how it is done i the real world.
I also have an old watch which has become magnetized. I can tell because two turns of the hairspring will stick together if they are made to touch one another. And as padi56 said, it runs much faster than a few seconds per day. As for your question about a compass being attracted by a watch I would guess yes. There is iron in a watch and a compass is a small magnet so I my guess it would be attracted. |
