I noticed in OP’s first post that the dial aged the way it did because it was stored in a dark area. How did the dark create the dial aging?

Just noticed this question. There is no hard and fast science on this, just opinion. Based on now having handled a reasonable number of vintage pieces it seems that dials go tropical more from pigment instability at time of manufacture than anything else. Some dye lots from different periods just break down more easily. For example certain serial ranges of DSSD and DRSD dial go tropical when other production periods of same watch do not (no matter how much sun they received). I do think that strong sun exposure accelerates this reaction in susceptible examples which is basically a breakdown of the pigment used in the dial. The aging of lume seems to be the opposite. Lots of sun bleaches out the tritium and the plots become very white. Whereas, when stored in the dark for a long time the tritium will become darker with shades from tan to yellow to oranges. Others may have different opinions but this has been my experience. For my dads watch it was in the sun constantly for the first 7 years and then in storage for a long time. I'd consider this dial to be "transitioning tropical". In most light dial is black but in bright sun at the right angle you can see a good bit of tropical burnt tones come out. Personally think it is really great effect. I've noticed this become more prominent over the many decades I've had it. Would be great if it went full tropical in my lifetime. |

Wonderful story!
As every WIS knows, there is something so personal and special about someone’s wristwatch. It must have been difficult for you to tell this story, remembering your father and his untimely death. It is so wonderful that you lovingly fixed his watch so that you, too, can enjoy it, and are looking forward to passing it along to your beautiful daughter. Kudos to Phil Ridley as well. Thanks for sharing! |

Then I put it away in the dark for 6 months or so, and when I got it out it was creamy again. |

I’m speechless not only by the story but by your being so open to share your life experiences with us. What’s most valuable about watch collecting to me is the priceless connection of life to the watch. As for me I’ll keep 4 ever my ‘96 DJ that my wife gifted me during her first of many cancer treatments in NY. We all have attachments to some watches because they remind us of life and our loved ones.
