Rolex 5500, 1961, Cannot arrest second hand

Hi all,
My trusty 58 year old 5500 Air King has a problem.
The second hand can no longer be arrested for synchronization by gently holding back the crown.
Turning the crown anticlockwise, the hands move forwards.
Turning the crown clockwise moves the hands backwards.
I feel sure that is incorrect.
I am sure that clockwise should advance the hands and anticlockwise should move hands in reverse.
Am I mistaken?
Can anyone confirm which way is correct, please?

Michael.
