5712/1A trade or sell to purchase at AD

Bought my 5712/1A at retail here in HK just over 3 years ago now and seeing the current market purchase price of circa USD200k is making me think if I should trade or sell.

The 5712 is my only mechanical watch at the moment and my relationship with my AD is OK but having said that I haven’t bought anything from them in a long time!

My options as I see it:

1. Trade with a reputable dealer for a grand complication (PCC if I’m lucky; may need a little extra $$!) or maybe a 5167 + perpetual calendar?
2. Sell and use the funds to buy a grand complication at my AD in the hopes of getting another Aquanaut or Nautilus allocation (not sure I can deal this way)
3. Hold and enjoy! The 5712/1A is great and just buy a dress watch sometime in the future

I really only just want to have two PP’s in my life: a sporty watch like an Aqua or Nautilus and a dress watch “lower end” grand complication

Your thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

Personally I would go with #3.

Yes, while one can argue that the price at $200k is very attractive and there are "better" options out there, frankly a 5712 can be a "one and only" lifetime watch. A grand complication while amazing (I have some), are not daily watches. I would suggest keeping it and saving up for a complicated piece.

I prefer #1. If not, #4 Cash out and wait for a watch you want.

Tough choice. Option 1 & 2 are tempting….but….is this a temporary spike/bubble? Or does it go higher? I’ve cashed in a few pieces and took advantage of today’s craziness recently, but I’ve also cashed in a couple years ago when I thought… it can’t get higher (5990 @ $90K)

Like I said, tough call. If you’ll enjoy having two right now that’ll give you as much or more happiness as your current one, then I’d explore option 1 & 2….but don’t be upset, or be prepared (mindset) if the one you trade keeps going upwards in value.
All options aren’t a bad deal in my opinion. Someone on here once gave me some good advice… Turn down the noise and go with what will make you happier!

I would hold on until it's discontinued, sell after that.

Every one of those options makes sense and I’d be considering the same. I’d go with number two, because you’d be making a major trade up while the market is giving a premium to the 5712, and building the relationship for future acquisitions, perhaps in a cooled of market. Good luck!

P.S. love that 5712!

I like #3 and am in a similar camp personally except for having gotten the dress watch first and a 5711/1A instead of your 5712/1A at retail later.

I am not keen on getting a PCC. If anything I might pick up a 3940 at some point and possibly a 5170. More likely I'll look elsewhere altogether though.

Keep in mind if you sell it and want to buy another PP or hot piece you’re buying at the top of the market. It’s one of my favorites so I’d keep it but if you’re planning on selling I’d sell to a dealer or consign with one. I can’t imagine the brain damage of selling a $200k watch and all the scams and flakes you’d have to endure.

if you truly only want two PP I'd buy a 6119G/R grey right now and be done with it. then you would have a great two watch combo. if you want to expand your collection I'd consider selling it and buying a 5270 or whatever your heart desires from the AD. Also love the 5327G.

I'm in the same boat as you. If the price of 5712 hits 250K (easy target), I'll sell and get a grand complication. The 5712 is so beautiful, it's hard to let go.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Very much appreciated!

Yeah, good point in that the 5712/1A may be discontinued and the price goes higher so might be worth waiting for that

I probably need to have an open chat with my AD and ask them what they think. I know selling is not encouraged but it’s been 3 years and I’d be doing it to spend more money with them. I might as well reach out to a dealer or two as well and see what’s available and what they say too.

Good point that a PCC or other grand complication is not an everyday watch. It wouldn’t be for me anyway. Apple Watch gets most use and I haven’t worn my Nautilus much recently given the covid restrictions in HK. It actually freaks me out a little that I’m walking around with circa USD200k on my wrist. Especially since my insured amount hasn’t kept pace with market prices!

I would upgrade to a grd comp, and ask the AD from which you bought it to source you another 5712. Of course don't mention that you sold the one you had

I'd hold onto it and wait for a discontinuation if cashing out was the option you wanted.
Else just hold onto it and save for another piece. Such a fantastic piece in the 5712

Relatively uncommon for an AD to source you two of the same sports pieces unless you’re a major whale.

I vote option 3 but wait until this years releases are announced in case something changes your plans.

#3. You've owned it from day one. Might as well continue if you still enjoy the piece. While you might have a shot to trade up, I tend to think you'll miss the 5712. Replacing it will be hard to do in the future considering today's crazy pricing.

The extra $$$ value is a mute point if it's just going to sit in a bank account.

This! Replacing 5712 is going to be HARD and prices don't seem to be cooling down either. I'd at least wait for two things: (1) discontinuation announcement of the 5712 and/or (2) confirmation from your AD that they can allocate you something VERY nice.

If you choose #2 and get another Nautilus or Aquanaut, you will still face with the same dilemma again because the market price will be very high again.

Thanks all for the feedback!

I think a good idea to:
- wait for the 5712 to be discontinued
- see what Patek releases very soon
- speak to my AD and see if they can allocate me a really great piece (or two!)
- speak to a dealer or two to understand likely purchase price in todays climate (I haven’t thought about auction)

I’m not one to collect and trade very often. I’ve really enjoyed the 5712 and continue to do so. I would miss it for sure but if I got allocated a 5726 I’d probably be a very happy man!

This makes sense and seems like a very reasonable thing to do. Definitely do your homework (talking to AD, dealers, etc.) before pulling the trigger. Plus Patek should be making new 2022 release announcements in just about 2 weeks.
