18k vs 750 hallmarked on DD36?

Learned forumgoers,

In looking at 118209s, I’m finding some with lugs stamped “18k” and some stamped “750.” I know these mean the same thing, but is there any rhyme or reason to seeing one or the other? Are both potentially correct or is one a sign of some authenticity concern?

Any guidance would be appreciated!

Also, apologies if this has been covered before. I did search. And I’ve seen a few websites that discuss Rolex hallmarks, including, also, Au750.

Anyone have a read on all of this?

Are both watches yellow gold or is one pink or white gold?

I’ve been told that it used to be the case that yellow gold DD40s had a different hallmark than they do now. I don’t know if this applies to other models/metals (or the accuracy of the first sentence).

Others may be able to assist if you post pictures. Hopefully someone with a DD36 could let you know if it looks like their one. Good luck

Pictures attached---with apologies for the size/quality. I'm stuck with what the sellers have posted.

Unless I'm misreading, the first has "750," and the second has "18K." (It's a little tough to see in the latter.)

To be clear, I have not purchased either of these watches and these pictures are not mine. I also have no reason to doubt the honesty of either seller (one of them in particular has a strong reputation here and elsewhere). I'm just curious if this is an issue or just one of those Rolex things that varies from year-to-year, perhaps, even within the same mode range.

Maybe that’s it—the constant is change. :)

I have come across both through the years. My current 118238 (2002 production, originally purchased in 2004 in Michigan,USA) has 750 and I have held several earlier models (18238 and older)where I have seen both 750 & 18k. I believe it seems to be tied to production years and less to geographic distribution. But hey, it’s Rolex; who the h*ll knows. Hope this helps a wee bit.

I think it might be due to which countries they were originally exported to. I've seen a French example that had an extra hallmark.

I started a thread on this a few years ago. I had a P-serial WG DD36 with some odd markings and also a tiny Rolex crown/coronet in the center of the caseback. Couldn't find anything on it for a long time, then finally found info that it was an import/export stamp but wasn't sure which country.

I think I read somewhere those were for the French market.

I think you're right. It was a very odd little marking but kind of cool.
