Moon phase

Curious what the attraction is? Does it serve much purpose historically, maybe for people connected with the sea? Do people find a use for it or is just nice to know and aesthetically pleasing?

I don’t own one, but I like them.

I just think it’s cool that a watch can tell you that kind of information.

Heck, even the date on my Datejust is pretty cool.

I like complications.

The observed phases of the moon were likely an early way to note the passage of time as it is a repeatable phenomenon.

Most moon-phase watches are novelties without much practical value

It is very helpful for those who follow the lunar calendar, and are dependent on the moon's phases for scheduling in certain religious activities.

I could care less about the lunar calendar, but I do know it looks awesome. My ultimate grail would be if Rolex was willing to put a moonphase back into an oyster case. Make it triple date while you are at it. Give me a modern 6062 baby.

i have a moonphase on my Speedy 3576.50, and i love it. its nice to see everyday what phase the moon is in...helpful from anything from fisherman to people that enjoy astronomy. if i want to pull out my telescope i already know its near full moon so dont waste my time. Also, is VERY pretty. thats probably the biggest thing. a cool complication

Moon phase

For me it’s mostly aesthetics. I think it’s a good looking complication when done well. For example having a moon with texture and shading for definition, having additional decorative designs, or being fully lumed.

Rolex moonphase on the Cellini line are interesting as they use meteorite for the moon (I think?). It’s simple and not overly decorated.

A poorly done moonphase however has the opposite effect and degrades the overall look of a watch.

We all have our personal preference. Your profile picture is of a watch that helps with strong magnetic fields, which most owners of it don’t use it to its full potential they just like the look/feel. I personally like both, but only own a moon phase. I bought it because I wanted a moon phase style watch and liked the dressier look. Highly recommend trying one on if you haven’t.

For me it is a classic horology complication like the power reserve. Probably why this is one of my favourite’s...

You have to be a lunatic to truly understand. BTW, that Cellini with the meteorite moon is stunning, one of the finest moon phases I have ever seen.

I love the moon phase complication. I think if done right it can add a romantic feel of yesteryear.

Having had one watch with a moon phase complication, I must say the extra complication was neat as how it was laid out on the dial I found visually appealing as well. However it was 100% useless. 99.99999% of people do not care or need to care about the phase of the moon. But it looked great and I would most definitely buy another moon phase complication if a watch I wanted had one...

I think it was said that the moonphase complication started appearing around the 16th century so people would know when they could go out at night as obviously there were no streetlights yet in remote areas.

It’s very helpful to predict when my patients are going to be crazier than normal (full moon)

Completely agree.

As an amatuer astronomer I enjoy the complication

It's classy and almost always looks fantastic on the dial and adds to the appeal I can't remember one that detracted off the top of my head.

Plus if your outside with friends and there's a clear full moon you look at your watch and tell them "full moon tonight". Feel free to use that joke everyone :D
