New crown/stem, different winding sound?
Just had a “five year” overhaul on my K series Sub Date at a local Authorized Dealer/watchmaker. Gave it to them on 6/2, called me w/the estimate on 6/5, called to tell me it was ready for pick up on 6/17.
Appearance wise it looks great! The tech actually commented when I dropped it off that it was in very good shape and while there was no need for “major” cosmetic work they did a nice job removing some small scratches on the case (lug ends) and bracelet. Fliplock had the tiniest bit of play – just enough to get my thumbnail under – but now sits nice and flush to the clasp. The bezel had a very tiny bit of play as well but now sits, and stays, exactly where stopped. Mechanically it was running, consistently, +8 sec. per day but not exhibiting, outwardly, any other “problems”. Since getting it back on 6/17, after synching with timeanddate.com, it has gained less than 2 seconds. The work included a full two year, in store, warranty and they “gave” me a polishing cloth and travel pouch. Very happy with the work (if anyone in the Long Island area wants more info please PM me as I would recommend this jeweler) but I do have one question for our experts; Before the service when I wound the watch manually the sound/feel was akin to a buzz, somewhat like winding a small child’s toy, and in a quiet room I could hear that same sound when I moved my arm and assumed this to be the watch “winding itself”. In the overhaul they replaced the crown/stem assembly and now it winds with a more springy click like feeling and no longer makes the “winding” sound when I move my arm. Is that a “normal” change to observe with a new crown/stem? |

Very tough to "hear" the before and after sounds even with your good description.
It seems like it is correct after service. You should not hear anything like a buzz when winding. The rotor should not make any appreciable noise. When winding with the crown, it should be smooth and produce almost no noise. I'll bet you are good now. Enjoy! Mark |
