16622 Yachtmaster or 116710 GMTii-C

Help me decide on a 40th birthday gift to myself. I am torn between these two pieces and recently discounted the 16613 and 16613 Serti Champagne from my list, otherwise it would have been a three horse race. Perhaps as a 50th!

Two to consider as a watch for the next 6-8 years, which one would you recommend for (Design, Cost, Functionality, Longterm appeal, X-Factor)? Or anything I haven't consider.

  • SS/Platty YM 40mm current list $9450
  • SS 44mm "50th Anniversary" GMT current list $7000

lol, those are the exact two watches that I am also considering also! I vote for YM because its way more exclusive, and looks really great for formal or casual settings. I am disapointed that theres no new clasp... but knowing fewer people have it makes up for that.

I hear they both have Solid center links..

Team Canada!

Yep our city's Team lost single handedly, to the By-fugly-an one!

WoW, this is a tough choice as I flip back and forth weighing each piece's positives! Keep them coming!

For all of those factors, IIC wins.

I know, Emil, but they are both superb watches. I own the YM so I know how beautiful and dressy it can look, but the GMT-IIC is superbly engineered and so practical to use - in fact, the BEST watch to come out of Basel in recent years.

Exactly JJ,

We ,too, have a ladies YM for my frau as well as a GMT 116710 LN, which I also feel is the best thing to come of your forehead (Jocke's photo) in a long time!!

GMT-IIc; it has all the updates! I like the look of the YM a lot more after wearing my GMT-IIc for awhile, but the old bracelet is not as comfortable as the new, updated version.

The GMTIIC is 40mm (not 44mm) but in terms of bang for your buck, you can't go past that

IMO the GMT IIc is the best value. The new case, bracelet and maxi dial brings this model right up to date with the best available from Rolex at this time. Couple these features with the 3186 GMT movement, new ceramic bezel and bezel mechanics - you have the winner.

For the G-factor: Yachtmaster
For everything else: GMTIIC

I had the choice between the two and I bought the SS GMT even though I already have the TT.
Buying the YM new from the AD was a little hard for me to motivate regarding the pricedrop of a brand new YM.

Buy the GMT now and pick up an almost new LNIB YM later
Just my $0.02

If resale value within the next 2-3 years is important to you, then the GMT2c is the logical choice because the depreciation hit you'd take on the Platty is greater.

However, I believe the price drop evens out after 6-7 years onwards so if you're not someone who flips regularly and intends to keep the watch for many years, then other factors like aesthetic appeal, the feel against your skin (maybe even the weight) and perhaps price enter the equation (the GMT is cheaper).

My pick would be the Platty partly because it's a bit more exclusive and I like the idea of having a bit of platinum on my wrist, but either way you're on to a winner! Good luck!
