new suit - recommendations.

looking to add a suit or two to my wardrobe.

usually wear scrubs to work.

however wife has a few philanthropic events planned for the upcoming year.

likely will do a navy, charcoal.

I have been looking at brooks brothers, but wanted to see if you guys have any recommendations.

don't have the timeframe for a bespoke suit, as I need it by dec 10.

ideally would like to stay between 500-1000, I think BB is closer to 1000.

appreciate insight. cheers.

Philanthropic events??? Sounds like time for a tux, mate. At least a black suit.

Hugo Boss, Brooks Brother, maybe Indochino.

Buy the fit, fabrication and fabric. Ideally in that order.

And plan on a nice pair of plain toe or cap toe black oxfords. Not derbys.

Should also mention that Brooks Brothers usually has a suiting sale right after Thanksgiving. I bough my tux there at about 30% off.

Comb Yoox for Canali, Corneliani, Caruso etc. You should get them between 5-700 and throw in a couple hundred for a good tailor to make you look pristine.

Sid Mashburn is great. They have a ‘Kincaid Number 2’ suit in exactly the two colours you said, charcoal and navy. They can make adjustments for you in-store and keep them on file so the next time you order the adjustments are already made. It is $950 and much better than Brooks Brothers.

X2 on Sid Mashburn with a caveat that their preference for their custom shirts is a very relaxed fit. I had to cajole their Atlanta tailor into bring my shirts in an extra 1.5” in the chest. The finished quality is outstanding on everything they sell, even OTR shirts and pants.

Suits are ALL about the tailor. A $3k Zegna or Brioni suit won't look great unless you have a good tailor. In your price range, I would recommend indochino, fully custom suits at ~$400, can't beat it for the price.

1. Go to a proper tailor and tell them what you need for what and then say nothing and do what they say.

2. Double that budget and you’ll quadruple the quality and results. Or get one better one and some accessories to keep it fresh. Gorgeous ties and shoes etc.

3. Your wife and the people you want to impress with her will notice.

Have fun!

Been a Brooks guy for many years. Sadly, it is not the same company after bankruptcy. I now look to Hart Schaffner Marx.

You may know this already, but Brooks Brothers is now making some higher quality, older-style Oxford shirts in the USA again. At Drake’s-like prices though: https://www.brooksbrothers.com/regen...t/ME04452.html

Thanks, did not know. Wish they would bring back suits with pleated front pants.

new suit - recommendations.

Banana Republic Monograms are reasonably priced Italian fabric with good construction off the rack and can easily be tailored to your needs (hopefully your tailor isn’t booked out).

I would stay away from sister company Express.

Brooks brothers is another go to for off the rack suits, but have heard the quality is dwindling.

The tailor I use in HK does global tours - if you’re in a major city just book an appointment and they’ll fit you in their hotel suite. You pick fabrics, maybe grab some nice shirts too. They ship the garments to you.

It’s not the same as a multi-fitting bespoke suit you’d get if you traveled to them, but it’s better than you’d do off the rack.

When I was on the job I got my suits made in Bangkok with Rajawongse Clothier (Jesse and Victor). They tailor suits for the diplomatic corpse in BKK and they have gone to the White House to measure and cut for one of the Bush presidents. They also travel to major US cities.

My suits were measured by Mr. Sani, who travels to hotels all over the US. He sends the measurements and your fabric choice(s) to Hong Kong, where the suits are handmade (I presume). They mail the suits to you. His prices are below retail. I wore his suits exclusively throughout my legal career. I love his suits and I really don’t like wearing a suit. Also, I am on the short and heavy side. It’s nice to get a suit that fits. Doesn’t work if I buy off the rack and alter it.

He is a nice guy and a very hard worker.

Hong Kong Grand Custom Clothing by William Sani. Good website. Looks like he is in the Northeast US in December and January.

Another vote for Suitsupply. Good quality, and tailoring done on site. Highly recommend.
