Watch Out for Squirrels
A couple weeks ago a tropical storm came rolling through Florida. The next day my wife went to start her car and nothing happened, I figured dead battery. I popped the hood and a mother squirrel decided to build a nest in my wife's 4Runner engine bay. Apparently her babies were very hungry that night and feasted on the 2 main wiring harnesses. I noticed the damage to the wires so had the car towed to my local Toyota dealership. After inspection I received a call from the service advisor and he said you might want to call your insurance company. The total bill was $9,000!
I'm thinking a BB gun is my next step. I've heard squirrels are good eatin!

I have a lot of acorn producing oak trees and as a result I also have a lot of squirrels around my house and I occasionally see one under my 4Runner but so far so good. I would hate to have to declare war on the cute little buggers but they can be destructive and I don't need a $9k insurance claim so hopefully they will keep their grubby little hands off mine. Good luck.

That sucks. I had a family of em decide to make a nest in between the hood and the inside covering of my fj60. Must be something about Toyotas.
Luckily they didn’t decide to chew any wires that I’m aware of. The little bastards have hit me with acorns a few times. You’d be surprised how unpleasant a little acorn dropped on top of your head from 20’ can be. Still not enough cause for me to declare war on them though. I like the little guys being around. Yep, between the squirrels and birds that I buy bird seed for, the lizards that I protect from being eaten by my dog, my dog who’s spoiled rotten and the neighbors outside cat that gets bought off with fancy feast in the morning and afternoon I’m quite low on the pecking order around here. Wouldn’t have it any other way though. Sent from my Apple privacy invasion product |

We have a thatched roof, so daren't allow them on our property.
"Tree Rats" is what they're called around here. I give them the 'good news' with a .22, knocked about ten of them down this year. They get buried deep, in the vegetable garden. |

Man… I would tell you to just replace that yourself instead of forking over 9k but I can’t as I still have nightmares on fixing someone else’s half ass wiring harness job on a project car.

Something similar just happened to my wife’s car. We live in a remote area and her car got chewed up by mice. $12.5k insurance claim and 2 months in the shop.
My GMC was untouched. I guess mice prefer German hardware?? |

Apparently it’s the soy based wiring harnesses that they love to munch on. They did the came to my wife’s car (Mercedes) two summers ago at the cottage, but we didn’t have a $9000 bill.

Toyota has the wire harnesses made out of soybeans so that’s probably the reason.
