AD weird call

Hello, I am on the waiting list for a GMT and i have received a call from the AD asking me to bring my previously purschased DJ 41 in order to allocate the GMT for me! is that's normal?
has anyone experienced this before?

Sounds like they want to confirm you aren't a flipper, which IMO is ridiculous/absurd. It's none of their business what you do with products purchased with your own money.

That said, I'd just bring it to get the GMT and not make a big deal of the request, but I'm rolling my eyes pretty hard over here.

Fair enough. They are basically giving you the additional $5K in value for free. So they want to be sure it's going into right hands.

I don't think it's odd and wouldn't take offence if my AD asked I show them the 126610LN they sold me in order to buy a GMT. If you just buy new Rolex to flip them, then I'm glad your AD does some screening.

On principle alone, just because they said so, I would never bring it with me and I would let them know why. What I do with my property is none of their business. Whether they'd sell me a watch after that or not, I don't care. That's their call and none of my business.

Also note OP is in Oman, maybe this is par for the course there, but it seems clear they want to verify he's not a flipper by proving to them he still has the DJ.

Sounds reasonable to me. Although my AD has never specifically asked this of me, I know he values seeing me wear prior purchases in when I visit and I suspect it's to see that they haven't been flipped.

AD weird call

Obviously this particular AD doesn’t sell watches out the back door. I get that it feels insulting, but I also get why they asked, and am glad they don’t want to sell to flippers. I’d walk in there wearing my DJ, with a big smile on my face, and walk out with the new GMT.

It's none of their business but if you want the GMT and don't mind an AD pushing you around like they own you, fair enough.

Very foolish approach. In life decide what is the result you want and how best to achieve it.

Good for them for taking the steps to eradicate flipping to the best of their ability. Some of you sound like a bunch of Karen’s

Sounds fair to ensure you're an enthusiast and not a flipper.

I’m actually shocked that everyone here finds it normal/good that they ask to bring a previous buy to the store. Yes, people here don’t like flippers but in the end you can decide what you do with your purchase. If i want to throw it away on the street i can. I paid the money for it. It is not the AD his business what you do with it. BUT, then again, it is the AD his business if they want to sell me another watch or not. We are not entitled to any watches, the AD can choose who gets what but asking some kind of proof i find a little extreme.

Thank you.

Yeah, I'm also surprised by most of the responses, tbh, given the general disdain for ADs here.

If the AD doesn't want to sell watches to customers at retail, then they should find another line of business.

OP has not even confirmed if they still have the DateJust or not. Perhaps the AD knows they don't have it.

Im surprised that they are that bold, but their goal is to prevent flippers from purchasing. tbh I kinda like it!

The store also has the right to put conditions on the sale of the watches they have purchased with their own money.

All people do here is complain about flippers. But whenever these ADs make even modest efforts to discourage the practice, people bristle at that as well.

Lol the responses here are pretty funny. People on this forum hate flippers yet they say “my property my rules” and “never - based on principle”. Haha so then I guess I won’t hear a peep if someone got busted buying 20 Rolex in a calendar year and sold them all in that same year?

As for OP’s situation, it’s nothing to get offended about, they probably ask all their new clients the same and once they for sure realize they’re not flippers then they won’t ask anymore to bring their old watches in. If my AD told me they can get me a rainbow Daytona but I would have to walk in with all 4 watches I bought from them on one wrist, I would happily do so.

Agreed! I have no issue with ADs. The supply shortage is not their fault, unless they are selling stock out the back door. If Rolex finds out that they are, they will lose AD status. I know my AD also tries to weed out the flippers, by getting to know their customers. I feel fortunate to have been allocated a 36 mm OP, without a previous purchase history, even though it took awhile. I’m happy to wait , again, for my DJ. I will not pay grey market prices, unless I buy a used piece, that is priced right.

If I've said the latter once (or words of the same meaning) I've probably said it 100 times, not so much "my rules" but certainly "my choice", as it is the choice of any seller who they do and don't sell their stock to. I have never hated flippers or claimed to. Besides which, hate is such a nasty, destructive, toxic state of mind. With all due respect, rather a lazy generalisation on your part IMO.

My biggest issue with this request is the practicality/safety.

When picking up a new watch, I don’t like to wear an existing watch for two reasons:
1. I always want to wear the new watch out of the store, so I would ideally turn up at the store with a bare wrist on collection day.
2. Whilst I suppose you could put one watch on each wrist, I ideally wouldn’t want to be walking around a city centre wearing two Rolxes, for obvious reasons…

So I’d perhaps swing by with existing watch and come back later to collect the new one. Mildly inconvenience but worth doing if you want the watch.
