Surprise incoming : Coming "full circle" with a TT Rolex DJ36

AD called with a Tudor I had requested, I ended up seeing this available in the display case and had to walk out with it. This wasn't something I specifically had on my radar, and indeed not something I'm on the list for at any AD. But in some sense it's been on my "list" my whole life.

I'm an 80s child, I grew up thinking a TT Rolex DJ was the best and most expensive watch anyone could buy. I've posted about this before, but my grandpa had an early 80s 16013 that he beat the crap out of before someone told him how much a Rolex costs (I guess even in the 80s it was still big money) and he promptly put it away. He later gave it to my dad, who beat the crap out of it and wore it for about 20 years before giving to me.

I never saw my grandpa actually wearing it, just in pictures. Saw my dad wearing it of course. So in many ways the DJ, and specifically the TT, was my first Rolex love. I then moved on to craving and acquiring sports models.

Well my dad gave me that 16013 2 years ago. I had it serviced and the watchmaker assured me it's basically back to factory spec and I can wear it like a "new Rolex". But I still had some hesitation about wearing a 40 year old famiy heirloom around too much, if for no other reason than fearing theft/loss. So I haven't worn it that much.

I then started kicking around the idea (thought not THAT seriously) of getting my own 16013 successor. Something to start my own "history" with while reserving the 16013 for special occasions.

My own personal tastes have kind of come around very recently to such a watch as well. I'm starting to favor more comfortable and smaller watches. Maybe I'm getting older, but I'm also coming around to TT and PM. And I still love Rolex as tool watches, but if I'm being honest with myself, a Datejust is MY tool. I love and even prefer the look/design of the Professional models, like my BLNR. But I don't travel for business anymore and don't even like to leisure travel that much. I don't dive. I don't race cars, and I'm not an engineer. I work a desk job and I like to check the date a lot. A DJ is indeed the right tool for me.

So when I walked in the AD today and saw probably the most direct successor to my dad's watch but with an Oyster, I had to get it. The Oyster gives me some change from the 16013, but also subdues the watch a bit and makes it easier for daily wear.

Thanks for reading, and a pic of my new DJ, followed by a group pic including the aforementioned 16013.

Congratulations!
A DJ steel jubilee blue dial was first Rolex I saw in real life. First time I putted a Rolex on my wrist and feel like it was made for me, it's a TT DJ champagne dial with diamond hour makers.
I always love and would like to own a DJ TT fluted jubilee but always bought Rolex professional steel such as GMT, Sub, Daytona. I also own a 36mm Explorer. Maybe one day ...

Two Tones get a lot of unwarranted hate but they're quintessential Rolex imo...
