Please get what you think you'll be happy wearing regularly. I personally, though, would never do business with Bob's.

I would start where I just did, with the beautiful understated classic 36 mm silver dial OP:

From here, I’ll add a 36 mm DJ, probably the blue motif, on jubilee, with fluted bezel, or mint green, with same configuration, on Oystersteel. I have a nice Original BB58, on bracelet, and that should do me. I have about 100 watches that I need to sell, though I need to keep some special vintage ones and fun ones. I need a manageable collection. If I can bring myself to have a fire sale, I will have more than enough to buy another great brand new Rolex. I will not pay grey market prices. I’d rather wait another year for my Datejust. In the meantime, I have plenty of nice watches from which to choose, on any given day. Hopefully, they will start to dwindle, soon.

I have bought and sold off a couple piles of watches now. What’s interesting to me, reflecting back on that, is through all of that I learned a ton about watches, watch brands, and what I truly enjoy wearing and owning- and also what I don’t. Yes, I have made some mistakes and had a couple “what were you thinking” moments. However, given all of that I wouldn’t really do much different…

I’ve also learned that more than 4 or 5 aren’t for me either. 3 is just about right.

That said, for me I think it’s risky to start with a “3rd RV” piece if you haven’t experienced a bunch of watches. At least that’s how it’s worked so far for me

I think the progression is part of celebrating and enjoying ongoing success and hard work.

If I finished university and could immediately buy my dream house, cars and watches, I wouldn’t have the same satisfaction I get through having earned them and having worked for them. I’d find it harder to appreciate nice things if that was all I’d ever had.

Plus I’d have had no motivation to work for another x years. So yeah, I think better not to go straight to that 5th wheel RV or a few years later, you’ll be bankrupting yourself shopping for that private jet.

I'm simple when it comes to my Rolex wants. Were I to truly go back to the beginning ('09) I'd have gotten a 114270 instead of a 16570 and then a discontinued 14000 when I heard about an AD with a handful of NOS at massive discounts.

It's possible I'd have added my 124270 (that I traded my 16570 for) today, for something more modern, but wouldn't have traded either of the "originals" for it. If I'd just sat tight, I'd likely be buying a Zenith Skyline 36 or Tudor BB54 this year.

However, had I had such foresight in 2009, I'd have made other moves that would have allowed me to buy any and all watches I wanted today .

When asked this years ago my answer would be a lot different than today, for me knowing what I know now a steel sub (either date or non) and a Datejust with fluted and jubilee would be all I need and want but wouldn’t turn down a Daytona if offered one

I would keep my WG Sub, sell everything else (Hulk, BLRO, SS Daytona +++) and acquire a WG GMT and PM Daytona for a PM trio and call it done.

I'd be a one watch guy, a Rolex Submariner (Ref. 124060)

I kept my Submariner 168000 and ended up buying several more Submariners and a GMT II to pass down to my kids but they don’t have an interest in watches so I’ll keep my original Sub and sell the rest. It’s true, you spend the first part of your life collecting things and the last part getting rid of them.

My plan is to get down to a pair of khakis and a laptop.

Better for one is not better for another. Buy what you like. Don’t buy what I like. Do your research and don’t be limited by the choices. Use your RV experience to make a wise decision. Best to you!

I'd walk into an Omega Boutique and buy a Black Dial Seamaster 300M Diver there and then straight out of the case with 5% discount (UK) and wear it for the next few decades happy in the knowledge I played no silly AD games to get it, could wear it with shorts & t-shirt or Tuxedo and the Calibre 8800 movement through the open case-back was a sight to behold.

Maybe a little, but GMT was too similar to my watch and I never could get into TT. If I get another really need to be sure.

I assimilate watches to tools in the garage. None are better or worse than the other. None are an upgrade to the other. Some are passed down, some were acquired for a purpose and all are quality. To be a watch enthusiast, it is more about the journey than the destination. I can say that I appreciate what I have because of what I purchased, sold and kept through decades of collecting. I know the calibre, history and significance of each of these watches. Hope this makes sense to those who have made a similar journey.

Wouldn’t change anything, it’s been a process and the majority of the experience has been fun.

True, that’s why i know it’s true.

I did consolidate from multiple to one and even though i still love this watch, I feel myself always looking for next watches.

Either get a white dial daytona from grey and be done with it or go to the AD and get a plat daytona…. Thank me later

Been there done that. I ended up downsizing my watch collection to just one. Whenever I want to buy a new watch, I sell the one that I already have first.

He was right. I own my third RV today and it's where I should have started IF I had the money back then.

Well I am at the BEGINNING of my watch collecting today and can afford to buy my "third RV" literally and figuratively.

That being said, what would be THE watch that you would save up as a starting point today?

I am considering this: https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-gm...eer-model.html

Yet at the same time considering Tudors and others as a starting point of my collection, knowing that once I get the Rolex pieces added later on I probably will set these pieces aside.

Where would you start?
Interesting question OP.

Watches are, I feel, a different proposition.

I understand why that tricked out 5th wheel is a much better ownership proposition than the first trailer.

However, I get as much ownership pleasure from my SS 16600 as I do from my WG 116509. My Daytona doesn't give any performance, comfort, features or any other practical or physical benefits when compared to my £200 G Shocks. In fact the G Shock is better in every measurable way. More accurate, more features, more comfortable, more robust. My Daytona was was just something I wanted and was in the fortunate position (as you are) to be able to buy it. It was an emotional decision.

My advice is to try a few different watches on your wrist until you figure out what ticks your box(es). No pun intended.

Never buy anything as a stop gap that you feel you may set aside later. And buy with the heart, not the head

To have a fair amount of catching means alot of chasing.
The problem is that when the chase turns into a catch it creates a euphoria that leads to the next chase, versus the pleasure of owning the watch caught.
It becomes an addiction for many. I have more watches than I need, I still keep looking, and chasing.
