Buying a Rolex DJ 36 from Goldsmiths (UK)

Hi Everyone,

Hope everyone is having a good Sunday!

I wanted to get some advice on buying a Rolex, especially from the WoS group. In July 2023, I visited Goldsmiths Reading to my name down for Mint Green DJ 36 with a jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel. I have been visiting whenever I am in the area and I keep being told the usual things like "there is no stock", "we get orders very infrequently", etc.

I wanted to know if anyone had a good experience buying from Goldsmiths? Its November now and still heard nothing. From what I have understood the DJ is an easy to get model; I am not interested in a GMT II or the grail watches (at least not right now ).

Now I know you 'gotta play the game', so when I put my name down for the DJ, I also bought an engagement ring worth 2k, do I need to spend more to get a DJ? I really want to get the watch before I get married however I the benefit of time; I willing to wait it out a bit as I am still saving up and the wedding will likely happen within 2 years time.

At the moment I see the following options:

1. Wait it out: Wait and hope I get the call at some point in my life

2. Build the spend history: Play the Goldsmith fiddle and buy (reasonable) things until I am deemed worthy of having the DJ.

3. Go independent: There is a independent not too far from me (Robert Gatward, Windsor) - Has anyone had a good experience with them?

4. Try my luck abroad: I travel a lot, so if I ever go to a country where there are favourable exchange rates, try my luck there?

5. Go grey: This is my final option, I think this is what I'll end up doing if I don't get the DJ closer to the wedding time. Although I really don't want to pay a crazy markup over RRP. Although I understand I am going for the most popular DJ.

Appreciate any advice for the first time Rolex buyer; any tips on buying a Rolex for the first time are also welcome!

Thanks,

Jason

I have heard nothing but bad about WoS.
Go with another AD or grey.
come to Canada, we love Brits and Canadian dollar is going down the drain now.

I think you need some patience my friend

You requested the watch 3 months ago, in what I would describe as a relatively high demand combination.

Even at 36mm a mint green, fluted, jubilee is going to have a lot of demand.

I don’t think this is a poor reflection of the store you’re dealing with. Merely a fact of the market

DJ36 is easy to get in TT but not in SS. Also the mint dial is the most difficult to get.

I agree even in 36 mm my AD wouldn’t take a deposit since the mint is a popular model. I preferred the blue dial with jubilee and fluted anyway but mine took over 3 months to acquire. I think if you’re patient you will get it.

Your name should be put down at every AD in town.

Don't buy crap you don't want.

Hello,
I would not waste your time in Goldsmiths Reading. That shop is awful, I have been waiting for years for various watches from them and have had NOTHING.
I took my custom elsewhere and have had about 5 Rolexes in 2 years. Just don't bother with them. I still pop in there as it is close-ish to me and get the whole rubbish from them STILL.

Three months is not a lot for a relatively popular watch. Just wait and buy something nice every now and then for your future wife.

I have had great experiences with the WoS group (2 branches in London). No games. Have got 15 Rolex from them in 5 years and 3 PP this year. I’ve never had to buy any jewellery, never had to buy any other makes. Got a white dial Daytona 2 weeks ago after putting my name down a week before.

You’ve picked 36 which is easier than 41. However fluted and jubilee is the hardest combo. Add in mint green dial and you’ve got a desirable watch. Thing is, dozens of others are likely also registered for this too, and they’ll be lucky to get a few a year in that exact combo. Keep in mind how many DJ variations there are and how rarely that exact one will be delivered to your AD.

As for abroad, that won’t happen.

You’d be better off pricing on grey market, might be best option for you, especially on a tight timescale.

Thanks for the great advice on this, I will try my luck with a couple of independents and just get my name down everywhere for my dream DJ!

Had no idea the Reading store was this bad! Would built up my spending history elsewhere. Oh well, lesson learned!
