Difficulty pulling crown out to hack position

Every one of my Rolexes I have difficulty pulling out the crown to hack and adjust the time. Is this normal or is it just me? This happens with both, my 5 digits and 6 digits. I have to play around almost every single time. I'm scared one day I'm going to pull the crown out with force!

Anyone else have this issue?

I have the same issue and concern that I will damage the crown trying to pull it out. Are both of yours date complications?

Dates but also on the Daytona. Other brands never have this issue.

My other mechanical watches are butter smooth with positive stop points. I thought I must be doing something wrong with my Sub date.

I have exactly the same with mu 116610.

I took it to the RSC for them to "Feel" They said its quite OK and normal and nothing to worry about.

They said pushthe crown in again and pull out and itll be fine again.

They were correct It can take 3 goes though.

I think it comes down to making sure the crown is in the right alignment position. I find that when I pull the crown out to position 1, I gently “pull” while twisting back and forth ever so slightly until I feel the crown release.

I’ve never had to pull with “force”

I have the same issue with most of mine. Never really was concerned; figured it was normal.

My GMT Master and one of my 11 series Subs are like this. Not impossible and no strain involved. They just need a hard pull.

I've noticed the same issue, however this seems to help.

After I unscrew the crown and it "pops out", I give it a quick forward wind and feel a second "pop".

This seems to disengage the stem from the winding mechanism (or something to that effect), and it's much easier to pull out the crown to set the watch!

Will definitely give this a try. I've had the issue with a 5 digit DJ (I did once pull the crown - with the stem - off) and a 5 digit SeaDweller, but haven't noticed it with a 6 digit (yet).

Yes I have noticed that happens, what I found was that putting my thumb nail at the top, ie crystal side and giving a slight prying motion outward resolves this issue. Now I can put it into hack with ease. And it allows me much more control of the crown positions. Plus as mentioned after the initial spring release of the crown I always give it a slight forward twist to continue the release of the crown from the screwed down position. Essentially I feel two spring releases. Then I continue as explained above and can set the crown position with ease.

This is my experience with every Rolex I’ve owned. I’ve never owned a brand new watch to compare, nor have I owned a modern Rolex. Mine have always been 5 digit references. I have owned brand new Tudors however, Pelagos, BB and a Grantour 20500 and they were as smooth as butter. My Rolex’s all seem to be a bit finicky and leave me feeling a bit nervous every time I have to unscrew my crown and adjust anything.
I do feel better after reading that so many others are also feeling the same thing. I have learned to do what someone else wrote ..... I pull my crown out and give it a half turn forward and back until I feel it’s distinct engagement or possibly un engagement and then I pull the crown out. Maybe @Searchart will chime in and tell us something about it.

If you pop the crown out then turn it backwards and pull at the same time it pops all the way and it hacks. When I say turn it backwards I mean not in the direction you would wind it.

I had a heck of a time getting the crown out on my SD4K the other day. It's been driving me nuts thinking about it. Glad I found this thread.

Yes with date models. No date models no problem.

Yes, on my 114060. Doesn’t seem consistent though, and I’m never sure if it’s the watch or operator error.

It is usually caused by intermediate setting wheels that hit eachother teeth on teeth instead of smoothly engaging.

Happened me a few times with some of my watches - one in particular being a Sub 5513 (fully serviced etc) where the stem actually came clear of the movement. AD showed me the cause, e.g. a small retaining screw that holds the stem. Apparently it can tend to loosen up even after service, or it can simply succumb to too much pressure. There is very little holding the stem in place and it has made me quite cautious on withdrawing the stem to set the time etc, even on new model such as SD43. I now apply a little back pressure with a finger when withdrawing the stem to help counter the force - so far it appears to have worked okay.

Mines Fixed! My OP (no date) never did it but my Sea Dweller (with date) did after being serviced by Rolex in London. Took it into Rolex Toronto under warranty from the full service and when I got it back it was doing the exact same thing. Handed it back and just got it back today and it's fine now. Apparently they adjusted the length of the stem. Now it goes into hacking everytime, never binds.
