Was I also scammed ?

I have been looking for a Rolex Yacht Master in 40mm and I was looking at reels on FB when I see a guy going by The watch King nyc, I messaged him or who I believe was him to see if he had or could locate a newer 2019 Rolex Yacht Master 126622 with a blue dial. A short time later he says yes with box and papers 10K, I ask could he do $9,500 and get a yes (Great I think). He first asks can I pay with Zelle but since my account is new I can only send $500 week so how about a wire transfer. He sends and invoice and wire info but the wire info is really odd and because of that I stop the wire before hitting send.

Any experience with this guy or similar.

Thanks for the help,

Tim

That’s seems like a really low price for that watch. Be careful.

You should trust your instincts…. Hard pass if I were you. Think to yourself why is price too good to be true?

I wouldn’t risk it. I would rather pay a higher price from a reputable dealer than risk losing 9.5k

There’s a dark side to a lot of businesses, even the legit side of watches has an underbelly.

Sounds like you dodged a bullet.
The business could very well be legit but if someone is trying to pass themselves off as them on FB just to get your hard earned you did the right thing.
If you do a search you’ll find recommendations for resellers

If there is a doubt there is no doubt. It's not a difficult watch to obtain pre owned and plenty of dealers you can trust who will supply one, possibly including the dealer you thought you were speaking with.

That is not the way to buy a Rolex. Be very thankful you stopped. Buy the seller is the general rule. Good luck!

Buy from an AD or trusted seller.

Not someone you meet on Facebook, especially someone so quick to lower their price.

You need to do a lot more research before agreeing to send a wire to someone you know nothing about.

If there's an actual store, did you not call up the store to confirm it was them?

What made the wire info weird? Even for less valuable items, it's typical not to send via wire transfer or equivalent like Paypal FF unless you know someone and there's a certain trust level.

The fact he agreed to $9.5k should be a red flag.

Don’t just buy from random people you found on social media. Buy from people with tons of feedback from other collectors you know. If you don’t have those sort of connections yet go with someone whose reputation is beyond reproach and pay a bit more. It’s worth it.

When in doubt, pull out!

Just curious what was strange with the wire info?

Zelle + FB Marketplace....read up. Scams are commonplace. Far more due diligence is needed here, outside a social media platform.

OP, pls update to share on TRF.
Why don't you just fly to NYC? a few hundred bucks for airfare, on the top of $10k is still a good price, iMO

I agree with the others, something is not right, I would not Zelle that amount or wire it to anyone, unless I had a longtime business relationship with them and still I would have reservations. Once it’s sent it’s gone forever. I think you saved yourself a huge loss and headache. Always buy the dealer and check on them before you send anything.

Virtually every time I’ve ever been asked to send Zelle it was a blatant scam. I’m convinced only scammers even use it lol

Moshe Haimoff is a member of MODA. You could join Moda and then ask for a current reference for him. I noted a deal from Aug 2022, where someone wrote about him "Moshe Haimoff has been in the business for almost a decade from Diamonds to watches. He is from the streets ( 47th street of course) and has earned OG status among dealers over many years" and another one from January 2022, where a gang of people both stated that it was 100% okay to deal with him, and vouched for him (within MODA when someone VOUCHES for someone, that means that he is backing up the deal with his own money if it goes wrong).

At MODA, we wire money in advance of shipment (I have done that myself, to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars, never had a problem), and we ship watches to members and then expect to be paid upon receipt (I have done that too).

I am not a dealer - I am a private collector, but sometimes I sell a watch here and there, sometimes I buy a watch here and there, at MODA.

Keep in mind though that someone is only as good as his last reference, and there is nothing wrong with outlining the deal and asking for a fresh reference before you send any money. Also you have to make sure you are dealing with the right person - not some imposter pretending to be the vouched for seller. I didn't look very hard, but I am not sure if I see any very recent MODA activity from the Haimoff Bros.

As for 99% of the posts in this and similar threads, they are just talking based on "feeling" they have no idea if the seller is good or not. Do your own research.

Is it right to name a dealer here when OP is not even sure if he was actually talking to thid dealer?
