Are we saying therefore that there should be no premium for Mk1 red sub over a Mk4 or a patent-pending DRSD over a regular one? I'm not sure the world agrees.

The flat 4 and associated dial are indicators of a Mk1.

You’re comparing true vintage Rolexes to a relatively modern Sub. I think they’re two different worlds. There are dealers who make the same argument with the modern SD43, which had a slightly different dial when released in 2017.

I’m all about what makes a visual impression on the wrist, not tiny details. So for a red Sub, I’d much rather have an MK2 tropical version because of the visual beauty of the dial. It’s worth a premium, unlike an MK1, IMHO. And as always, the overall condition would be much more important, regardless of which version.

Many of these features are initially noted because they help establish originality/correctness, and then noobs begin to think that the features have some sort of intrinsic value.

If you are a collector sure the flat 4 is probably worth it.

Mine isn’t a flat 4 and I am more than happy with that as it cost less and is my daily!
