Given the choice of these two vintage red Daytonas of similar value (mega mega bucks) which would you choose?

I'd take a Daytona Spyder (i.e. spyder from factory, as some had their tops chopped by aftermarket companies) any day of the week, over that red Rolex - although if I wanted a Daytona, that's the watch I'd want over any other Rolex.

The watch is nice, and granted fewer of the red Dees were made than the Ferrari, but I have a couple of nice watches... I don't have a vintage Ferrari. Give me a V12 from Ferrari any day. That car is pure sex on wheels!

I beg to differ... Rolex made a small number of red Daytonas back in the day, specifically for the Japanese market. They went over like lead balloons, and were basically sold off at huge discounts to collectors.

It's one of THE most rare and sought after Rolex. I'm going by my fading Rolex memory, but I think fewer than 25 were made.

Huh... talk about coincidence. One of the residents of my apartment block has a Ferrari that looks remarkably similar.... I shall check it out closer next time... he's parked right near me.

As LM said, just because there are fakes of the red Dee out there, doesn't mean they never existed as a real watch, as supported by the link LM posted.

Besides, the question wasn't about authenticity, it was a hypothetical question about which you would want, similarly named products of wildly different form and function. But I'm sure you knew that, counsellor.

I would take the car!

I have often considered looking into a 308 as they are not hugely expensive (at least to buy - maintaining them is another story). I recall one day going to Costco and stopping for a coffee, when 2 guys in 308's pulled into the Tim's parking lot. The sound of them coming down the road made me weak at the knees.......

The existance of the "Rising Sun" Daytona has been a contentious issue for many years, however there are a few genuine examples out there - very rare and very expensive US$200k+. Not bad for a watch that probably cost under US$1,000.

But, if that's the one that was offered by Antiquorum, it's a fake!

Apparently, there was a bit of a legal fight over this watch between the seller and Rolex, as Rolex tried to confiscate it! I can't really remember the details, but can be found on BJS Online Forum (I hope I haven't broken any rules - if so, Moderators, delete as you wish).

They aren't that expensive to buy (308s) relatively speaking, but the maintenance is the killer. HOwever, after my ride in a 360 Spyder on Father's Day this year... with the feel, the sounds, the rush... well, if I wasn't married I could justify the cost of maintenance all the way to the poor house!

See, My plans were to buy a Rolex and Ferrari before I settle down or have my first child. MY mind set is focused on those goals. However, if I meet the type of woman that wants similar things then the Ferrari will come much faster.

I want to add that I love the Red Daytona history and story from those links. I had always thought it was a fake because I didn't think Rolex would put out a red dial watch. In reality, I think Rolex should make available more options for dials. Red should be a choice for the daytona. The Red would continue to give the WOW factor everytime you see it in your collection. Colors matter. Today, the Red Daytona would be popular. I like the Pepsi GMT. The bezel insert is unique just like my engine turn as oppose to fluted. Its the minor details that make a difference.My 2 cents-choose Red Daytona instead of Ferrari!

You need to know about the 365 Daytona. It is more valuable than a 360 F1 paddle shift, but the 360 costs less automatic mode and is more reliable than the 365. The F430 is also better than both because it no longer has a rubber timing belt but a chain! The timing belt service is one of the most expensive service costs of ferrari ownership at $3-6000!

One of my buddies just bought a 430. He just got the call today that it arrived., Just waiting for the weather to break, so I can park my butt in the passenger seat ( I don't get to drive

I drove a Ferrari before, and it truly is an experience. You can tell the car is well balance because it has no power steering, but yet very controllable. The problem with a Manual Ferrari is the clutch is hard. I found myself revving the throttle accidentally because I had to get my strength for the rock hard clutch pedal. Also the pedal offset is bad if you have big feet like me. The engine is directly behind your back and that makes driving a ferrari special with the sound combination of the engine revving and exhaust.
