Introducing Myself
Hi. I just joined this forum and, following the suggestion of the moderator, I am introducing myself. My name is Michael, and my login name is "Pianoman". I visited this forum in order to view pictures of the new Rolex GMT II "Z" Model 116713 which I have my eye on. I had a chance to see the watch at an authorized dealer's shop in the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas...what an Aladdin's Treasure Cave that place was! The watch, in my opinion, is spectacular. I have never gone for the two-tone look, but this watch just looks perfect, in my opinion, in the steel and yellow gold. The gold numbers on the bezel just grab your eye. Now I am fantasizing about buying the watch, and almost did, twice already. I returned to New York, called the Belagio to order the watch at full list price...$8925, and they wouldn't take my credit card! They don't take credit cards over the phone. I never got around to going to the bank to wire the money. Instead, I started calling some "grey market" internet sellers. One told me had the watch at a significant discount, but the papers were filled in with another person's name, making the watch technically used. Well, I haven't bought it yet, unable to pull the trigger.
My wife makes me feel guilty about buying watches, so I decided to sell one from my collection to finance it. I put my IWC ref 5001 in SS on ebay for $6990, but, again, couldn't go through with it and ended the sale before I had any bids. Such is the dilemma of the watch lover who is not rich and whose wife makes him feel guilty about buying nice watches. It is nice to meet you people and I hope to have some enjoyable discussions about my favorite watch brand...Rolex. One final questions: DO you think I should sell my Patek Calatrava Model 5196 to finance the GMT II? Mike Mike |

First, welcome aboard.
Second. Tough call on the trade. I myself, have not traded or sold from my collection to add any. I tried, but found it hard to part with one. Really a personal choice, how much do you want the GMT II and are you attached to the Patek. We have some guys here who swap watches almost on a weekly basis ( Hi Daren). Pictures are always appreciated. We don't see many Pateks here.

Hi Mike,
Welcome to TRF. While your choice of the new GMT-II is an excellent one, I would recommend getting rid of the Patek only if you are actually making a profit on it...or at least cutting even. Not sure how well that model will hold its value on the open market, but if you are losing too much then I'd recommend you hold off a bit. Good luck - JJ

Can you tell me about the used one? I think the new price is way too high too and many of the used or gray market ones will be covered by the seller as far as warranty.

Welcome to TRF, Mike. My wife, luckily, likes watches as much as I do - she has two Lady DJs, and is happy as a clam when I purchase one...ummmm, as long as its MY money.
As others have already said, can't help you make a decision regarding what to do to finance your projected purchase, but selling watches you own and LOVE to finance a new acquisition is always dicey at best. Cheers...

Welcome to TRF, pianoman (that's one of my favorite songs, btw) I would only trade what doesn't make me smile. Only you can answer that one. Best of luck with the acquisition

Welcome to TRF, Mike. Glad you decided to join our merry madhouse.
As for selling off one of your collection, that's a tough call unless you are a veteran flipper (a la Daren and JJ, among the most prominent here). Fortunately, my wife indulges my little hobby. She is not into watches as much as I am, but she does like her Cartier Tank and Declaration enough to wear them quite a bit. Good luck to you on whatever you decide. And do post some pics of your collection.

Hi Mike and welcome to TRF We're glad you found us and hope you can stick around and join in on the fun.
The new TT GMT II is a beautiful watch. If it smiles at you more than the Patek, then go for it. Pictures are required.
