Breitling B1 Chronometre A78.

Say no more...the best of the best.

Pity it was discontinued in 2006.

Great wrist presence. Double sided anti-reflection treatment on the crystal means sometimes you don't even think a crystal is fitted to the watch.

More functions than any watch I've ever had all rolled up into one.

"Superquartz" accuracy, the best of quartz you can get.

I finally got around to taking a photo of this incredible watch.

B1Shot1.jpg

Some less known facts:

The lighting of the luminous display is actually AC current and the watch has a built in transverter to change the battery current from DC to AC.

The hour minute and second hands are not set from the movement of the crown as such. The hands are syncronised to a digital time that you programme into the watch. Once you punch in the time on the digital display and push in the crown in, the hands move exactly into the precise position of the programmed time. That is really cool to see.

Some may say that there is a disconnect between the user and the watch with this kind of programming, it is very different than the way you hack the hands on a mechanical watch. I say it's all good just different, each has their particular satisfying aspects.

The watch has a perpetual calendar to the year 2100, so you will never need to change the date for months, leap years for the next 91 years.

You can have 3 timezones:
Timezone 1
Timezone 2
UTC time.
Each is accessible by a twist of the crown.

The bezel has 2 functions:
1. A count down minute timer up to 60 minutes (outer bezel);
2. A slide rule where you can calculate multiplication, division, rate of decent, miles to kilometers etc.
Some say you can do currency conversions. I guess you could.

Anyway, one other thing is the crystal is completely flat and finished off superbly flush with the top edge of the bezel.

One thing that is particularly noticable in comparison to Rolex watches is the crystal is coated on both sides with anti-reflective material. On some occasions and angles you would swear that there was no crystal at all in the watch. This really adds to the aesthetic enjoyment and pleasure of the dial, because lets face it a lot of the time you look at your watch dial you are just admiring it's beauty. In this case you get that added beauty without the glare. Very cool

Great looking watch Stevo, (one of my favorite Breitlings).

Actually didn't know some of the info you've posted about the B1 in this thread. So a big thanks for sharing this with us.

Congrats and wear it well.

Cheers,
Joe

The B-1 is a great watch at night. The lume is quite good, but I would not say outstanding. However, the luminous backlighting of the digital display is very convenient and practical.

The digits in the display as you can see from Brandon's photo above are luminated in a beautiful 'electric blue' colour, which is very interesting because their colour when otherwise not lit up is gold.

That is one gorgeous watch Steve... if I ever go high end quartz or digital it will be Breitling for sure... but for now my new Blackbird will have to do!

Thanks guys.

I had a bit of a problem recently with this watch.

Breitling apply an anti glare coating to the outer surface of the crystal.
When I'm on my bike I wear a showerproof adidas jacket. Well the jacket has a mesh liner. Nothing really abrasive to me, and it doesn't irritate my skin. However, it seems to be able to remove or 'cloud' the anti glare treatment and thus makes the crystal cloudy at a certain angle.

I'm not happy about this as it has permanently impaired the anti-glare treatment. However, I'm not sure there is anything I can do other than buy a new crystal at I expect quite a few hundred dollars

Breilting will reapply the anti glare coating with a service, no new crystal required.
