The SEL came a couple of years before the lug holes dissappear. I'm pretty sure that A serial had the older stamped endlinks and the SEL came in around P serial.

May be true, may not be. I think there are still a hand full of them floating around. I've seen reports on here over the last two months of people finding them in the States. I even saw a TT one right here in SoCal. You can't be picky on the bezel insert, but you can always have Rolex change that fairly cheap.

I love my Exp. II, but if I could have found a GMT II BNIB from an AD at a substantial discount, especially if it was one of the few with a 3186, I'd probably have gone for that instead.

tough, tough decision...In the summer months when I don't wear sweaters everyday, it might be nice to have the Exp II since it's not as flashy...more low profile.

Tough call...

I'm leaning toward "doing" it...
And...if/when I miss the Exp II, I'll look for one with a white dial instead of the black that I have now...

I would do it. Exp II is great watch, very beautiful and versatile, but GMT is something iconic!

Thanks
Go for it!

I did it! As much as I loved my Exp II, I somehow got bored of it. I have a 16710 now and I really love it. Yeah, I've been demoted to a 3185 movement, but how often do I set the jump hour hand? And how often do I go through a magnetic field???

Do it! I have had both and prefer the GMT. You have some great bezel options too!

Yeah, I DID it, like I said. I just swapped the stock all black bezel for a Coke. I love it!!!
It has become my favorite model. I love the history behind this watch too.

You're going to take a hit on the Explorer II. I wouldn't do it though. Just my two cents.

Actually, I made a few bucks on the Exp II since I bought it used at a very good price. The hit went to the previous owner.
