Thinking of buying a demagnetizer for my 16619 GMT Master II. Any advice?
I was looking at the inexpensive blue ones that are up for sale on e-prey for less than twenty dollars. Is this adviseable? Should I get a better one say from Ofrei? Or, since it's a Rolex, should I just forget about it and just go to the AD?
Thanks, much.

Does your watch get magnetized that often? I have never had it happen.
Proceed with caution. Most good watch demagnetizers are a type that completely surrounds the watch with the field. With any type it is easy to magnetize your watch as to demagnetize. Technique is critical. Mark |

So far within the year 2009, it has been magnetized twice.
Thanks, Mark.

Yeah,. I don't think the cheap ones will work on a cased watch.
And how would you know for sure your watch is magnetized to begin with? If you demagnetize a watch that isn't magnetized, don't you magnetize it? ![]()

I took the watch to the AD twice because it had speeded up 20 secs, or so, a day >>>
The watchmaker there told me that it had been magnetized. In fact, this happened almost two weeks ago.

So, there is no way to tell for sure if your watch is magnetized or not without a watchmaker's inspection, and once he diagnoses the problem he fixes it on the spot, so WHY do you need to buy your own demagnetizer??

I think that I would look more into why your watch would get magnetized so often..
I have not had one exhibit any magnetism for years........

So that I don't have to go to the AD.

Yeah but that still doesn't solve the problem of "knowing if your watch is in fact magnetized or not"?

You can get yourself a dime-store compass...
Then, if the compass points at your watch rather than at North, it is probably magnetized......... ![]()

I know when it's magnetized because when I think that it is I take it to the AD >>
and they confirm that it is. Maybe they were lying to me - both times.

Man you must work or play in some really unhealthy EM fields to have your watch get magnetized that often maybe you do need a Milgaus or a change of environment.

Note that he writes his messages in the Title window. There are long range effects...

I'm always worrying that if I leave it next to my watches (e.g. on my bedside) it'll affect it, though to be honest I have no clue how powerful the magnet is (strong enough to grab coins at least) ![]() |

So my watch maker told me that extensive laptop use may have demagnetized my Rolex....
Guess I need to keep it off whilst typing. |
