"Gilt" Dials

Hi there,
It's me again, this time asking a question which I am sure must have been asked many times before, but as I have always worked on the principle that it's better to ask a stupid question than to make a stupid assumption - here goes: my 1963 Explorer, which I am continuing to research, has a black dial/face which all the literature seem to refer to as "gilt". Now to me gilt means "gold-coloured" or "gold-plated" which, clearly, this is not. I would be grateful for an explanation. Thanks.

Gilt is refering to the gold text (on the black dial)
