Opinion needed on an Omega
Hi guys,
I'm new to the forums. I was referred here by a member of a car forum. Anyhow, I'm looking into purchasing an Omega in the very near future. So far I've narrowed it down to either the Seamaster 300 M chrono diver or the 300 M chronometer. The design of the chrono diver is a bit more striking but the chronometer has the co-axial escapement. So I have two questions for you guys: which should I go with (which would YOU go with)?? and if I go with the 300 M chronometer, should I go with the quartz or automatic (any major things I should know about)?? I'm new to watches for please forgive my ignorance. Thank you for any advice/opinion in advance!! |

1. I'd get the non-chrono. Simply b/c I like clean non fussy dials. ( The only chrono I like is the legendary Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch --check out the pics on this forum)
2. Get the automatic. Something special about owning a watch that has "soul" for lack of a better word. Quartz is fine .... but there's something to be said for owning a mechanical timepiece--automatic-- that has all these cool parts, wheels, springs, levers, and such as the engine of your watch. Though, of course, automatics have to be serviced every 5 to 7 years and you have to figure that in to the cost. Good luck! |

Wow it seems that the majority is the recommending automatic (pretty much expected I suppose). As for which what I should go with, that isn't so clear. I'll probably end up going with the Chronometer one (co-axial) but would like to hear other people chime in about which one they would go with so i can make up my mind.

Depends.
Will it be the only watch you wear? Automatic. Will you swap watches around? Quartz. I hate setting a watch every time I pick it up. Buy second hand. Much, much cheaper. |

I'm still on the fence about which model to get. The chrono diver looks "better" but it doesn't have the co-axial escapement. Someone told me that since the chrono diver is more "complicated", it has a higher chance of breaking down. Any thought on that?

Omega says automatic service intervals are between 4 and 5 years and 10 years for a Co-Axial. When a watch is serviced is dependant on the owner, and some wait until the watch shows a problem that suggests the watch requires servicing.
Bear in mind that it costs more to have a chronograph serviced than an automatic and less again for a quartz movement. However, quartz SMP's will have to be tested for water resistance every time a battery is replaced which could be every 3 years. You are always going to hear horror stories from people about any product on the market, some will be first hand while others will be along the line of “I know someone who”. A chronograph has more components due to the extra features it performs and some people will think that the more functions something does means there is more that can go wrong. At the end of the day, what watch you choose will be down to research you have carried out and which you prefer. In photographic circles, we say go to your nearest dealer and try out the different models to see how they feel in your hands, I would think that the same can be said regarding a watch, try on the various models that you like and then make your decision, you are the person who has to live with it, not us. Good luck with your search and I wish you good health to wear the watch of your choice. Brian |

Thanks for the reply Brian! I'm hooked on photography though and I did check out the cameras in person before I bought it. Anyhow, I'm asking for opinions just so get a better idea of things. I will go to an authorized dealer this weekend and check out those 2 watches in person and go from there.
Thanks to everyone that replied! I'll keep you guys updated. |

Not sure about all that, but when you try on the Chrono, it will likely become the object of your desire.

Buy the "real" watch--an automatic. Even though, there's nothing wrong with a quartz watch.
