Hi All,

Right now, I have this opportunity to purchase a pre-owned Sub 16610 with serial starting with D. I'm totally new to Rolex, and this will be my first Rolex watch. The condition of the watch has been appraised with a G8 (8 out of 10 grade). The price is about $4200 CDN + 500 taxes = $4700 CDN. I would like to find out if i'm paying too much for this since some are selling as low as$3000ish.

Also, I have read on this forum that the 16610 is now discontinued. I wonder if it will hold its value in a few years as people will be trading it for the newer model. I'm worrying that there are so many older Subs out there and therefore the supply will exceed demand.

What do you think?

The 16610 is a iconic watch and I am sure you will enjoy it.

As for prices, I have no clue. Please post some pictures when you finally get it on your wrist.

welcome fellow canadian!

IMHO $4500 is a tad much for a D serial. i think a fairer price is more around $4000. as far as supply/demand, i wouldn't worry about it. rolex holds its value because they only make a certain # of pieces. although you may not get exactly what you pay for, the value will still stay up there.

Have you taken a look at the for sale section here on TRF? You can find some great deals, especially on a clean late model Sub. At least you can compare prices.

That doesn't seem too out of line for a D series. If it's really clean, and no major dings, etc., comes with box, tags, then go for it.

As far as value down the road? There are MILLIONS of subs out there, so maybe in 20+ years when it's looked at as "vintage" it will fetch a premium. Until then it will hold it's value well, and not a bad purchase. Enjoy it.

I'd wait for a better condition Sub Date.
They are plentiful available if you can just wait a little longer.
I know the feeling of jumping into the first one you see.
Go to the FS section here and soon you will see it for sale.

As what I can see from my reading glasses, the surface of the watch is in perfect condition. There is still a green sticker with 16610 on it at the back; however, the back of the casing is quite dirty (i guess from the human sweat). As for the band, there is a noticable dent. Just to give a bit more info, i'm getting this watch from a government auction. The watch was a seized item, so there are no box and paper. However, it was appraised by a third party so there will be some document from it as well as from the transaction.

You should also be sure to have the original box, papers, and any extra links that came with the watch.....

Reading the replies, you should also wait (although hard) to find one in a bit better condition - you should check the sales forum here for sure!

For that price I would look for something in better condition with box and papers. JMHO. Good Luck!
