Icon3 How you check your accuracy.

Hey Guys,

Mainly for the newer members who wonder how some guys can work out how their watch is .5 seconds fast or slow each day.

You need your watch fully wound and you need a reliable source of time display. You will also need your digital camera.

All I simply do is go to the site of choice like the US Naval Time Site.(I use a site that has an Aussie content.) I hold the watch against the screen and take a photo.

Now another photo 24 hours later,

As you can see the second hand is easy to see and the accuracy can be checked. You dont even have to have the watch in sync with the clock at the start.Just note the difference between the screen and the watch and factor this in each time check.

Aaron
Please excuse the photos as I was checking my accuracy when I decided to do a tutorial.

In the UK and some of Europe there may be a sligtly simpler method that does not need a Camera.

In Europe we have a broadcast time Signal .. Tt comes from Rugby in England and from a station in Germany.

They each have a radius of about 800 miles transmission power. They send the signal to Radio Controlled Clocks.

These are quite cheap to buy.

They are accurate to 1 second in 1,000 years. That should be accurate enough !!

Just hold your watch next to the clock and compare the time displays.

Simple and effective .. and the method I use. My watch has an error of +1 second a day.

I used to use time.gov, but now I really don't check ever.

This gives me a reason not to check right here.

I use Qlock from http://www.qlock.com

I have it set to most of the cities where you guys live so I can check what time it is where you are.

Qlock simply reflects the time on your computer. If Windows XP is your operating system, time signals are received, most likely, from NIST.

Time.gov's signal can be delayed, sometimes by up to five seconds. The most accurate way of synchronizing your watch is by radio signal.

So if I listen to Imus in the morning and hold my watch up to the radio, it will be on the money?

I don't think I'd depend on Mr. Imus, but just about all news stations offer a signal to synchronize the time.

Another choice is to puchase a clock that receives the time signal form NIST.

Here's an example of using an "atomic" clock to check your accuracy.

So the next question would be, how often do you guys check your watches to see if they are accurate?

I do it, maybe when I am rolling a date forward. They never stop, so I don't do it then, although if one ran down I would set it to time.gov.

I usually do it when I have to roll the date over on a 30 day month.
