Does the feel of winding the crown vary by model?
I was winding my wife's Date and it felt like the crown was not winding smoothly. I never really noticed it before but after winding my Sea Dweller the watches seem to wind differently. The Sea Dweller is much smoother and the transition between positions seems smoother. Has anyone noticed this or is it just because the crown is so much smaller of the 34mm Date? Thanks for your help guys.

You might find that your Date/DJ is already wound. I can feel the overwind protection gears/clutch slipping on mine when they are fully wound. It is a very subtle grinding feeling, almost un-noticible.
My Daytona however, has zero resistance and zero noise when winding, not even the usual audible "click" that my DJ and Explorer have... well.. the sound IS there, but you really have to listen to hear it. |

My Daytona makes a light scratching sound when it starts to get close to being fully wound, and before then it winds very smoothly and virtually silently - very solid feel. Best winding feel I've had in a mechanical watch.

Well from my experience the answer to your question is yes indeed. My Explorer I had a good feel, my Explorer II a better feel, Milgauss a little smoother yet and for the brief period that I owned a brand new Daytona - well it just felt like pure butttaa

Thanks for replying to my post guys. Perhaps the grittier winding is being accentuated by the crown being so much smaller than the one on the SD. I thought they would wind the same because they were the same movement.

Haha, well said. And thats actually not far from the truth, it has a nice, gentle, firm resistance but smooth...like butter

I feel significantly different between my EXP-II and my new Tudor Heritage. the EXP-II feels a good amount of resistance and the advanced click sound was audible, but the Tudor Heritage winding i feel "nothing' ! very very light resistance, and i have to put it right close and touched my ear to hear it clicks !

Again, thanks to everyone that replied. Is it possible that the difference in winding is related to lack of lubrication or dry oils?

Yes. That would be the main reason.

Some of mine feel slightly different even though they are new and from the same year.

Thanks for replying to my post. I'm trying to figure out if I should send it into RSC. I wasn't sure if that was just the "feel" of certain models or if the difference in some models/watches is only due oil degradation. |

I love the mechanical feel of the winding with my Explorer 1.
I just got an Omega SMP and you cannot feel any resistance with the winding at all. The watchmaker who adjusted the bracelet for me said this is not unusual for that watch. Like melted butter. I actually prefer feeling the wind as per the Rolex... |

Yes they do. And, it seems that the age between service will also affect the winding feel.

Just tested the Milgauss and GMT IIc against each other (both same age). Hard to tell but they feel and sound the same. GMT might give a tad bit more resistance.
Regardless I enjoy winding both. |

When I got it back I went to wind it and it was really stiff. I showed it to the service guy and he took it back to his bench. Five minutes later it was smooth as buttah; he said it just needed a drop of lube at the stem.

Based on everyones reply it seems that most would just let it go until service if this can even be perceived as a real problem. Thanks again all! |
