Well, I just got a phone call so none of this matters now. Apparently the City's fire code people don't take kindly to my trying to restore this thing anyway. They're throwing all kinds of regulations at me now, saying that I should remove the entire structure! Too bad the Historic Preservation Division referred me to them. They are in opposition to each other, and I'm the homeowner caught in the middle. Phooey. Government!

Can't you just hollow out the nearby telegraph pole and divert the smoke into it?

Seems plenty tall enough.
