Rolex Ref 5050 Bubbleback?

Hi All,

I have lurked for a while and decided to join the forum after my recent purchase. I just picked up a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Ref 5050 bubbleback. Its in great shape with the exception of the scratched crystal and faded dial. It has a 7206 riveted band from 1964 that is in excellent shape. The serial number is 695XXX. Looking at another thread on dating your watch is was made about 1949. My question is if this sounds about right?

Thanks in advance!

Bill

1950 would be a better guess. The 7206 bracelet is supposed to go with 20mm end pieces, so probably it's a retrofitted one (the 5050 is 17mm between the lugs). Before 1954 there were no flush end pieces, only straight ones, so to be more authentic you might try to look out for a riveted 17mm bracelet with straight end links. I'm not saying that will be easy! The 7206 is probably worth a bit if in good shape. People covet these for '50s-60s Subs and GMTs.

Pics would be nice!

Yes, as you can see, the end pieces are quite a bit smaller than the other links of the bracelet. They should be 20mm to fit properly! Best to wear it on a nice leather strap for now.

You can buff the crystal with Polywatch -- I'm sure the evenly patina-ed dial would look much better afterwards.

Selling the 7206 might yield enough funds to cover a good movement overhaul (with some left over).

How do the band ends come off? I just might use the 7206 on my other vintage Oyster till I get the expansion band repaired. I prefer my vintage watches over my new ones!

Hmmm...usually the end pieces are loose and kept in place by the spring bar. These may have been originally soldered on and filed down to 17mm. A jeweler may be able to remove them; then you'd have to find correct 20mm end links (e.g. #80).
