Favorite Golden Ellipse in Category Thread

A thread to discuss the merits of those Golden Ellipse's we like the best.

Remember there are no winners and there certainly are no losers.

Just a discussion of which Golden Ellipse's we like and why.

Pictures are a must whenever possible, remember it's awfully hard to discuss the beauty of something without a picture.

There are only 4 models in this category, who would like to start?

Well certainly not on the top of my PP wish list, but choosing one GE would probably be the 5738P.

Very thin, with a nice blue sunburst dial. Never seen one in person, but would be a suit watch for sure.

Anybody have an idea as to why the Golden Ellipse is so expensive in comparison to the Calatrava line, is it a unique movement to that model or something? Very nice watches BTW.

I would have to agree with you on your selection Paul. The blue gold dial on this watch is what set it apart from the rest in this line. The 3738/100J which also has the same blue dial would just be too small for me with the case diameter of only 31.1mm X 35.6mm.

I have yet to see one in person but I would love to. Although I don't often wear a suit I would almost have to find an excuse to do so if I purchased this watch. I'll bit that blue dial is just something else.

The movement is an ultra thin self winding movement.

From the Patek Philippe website:

Golden Ellipse
Marrying ancient and modern

With its divine proportions, the case of the Golden Ellipse, launched in 1968, has no doubt inspired one of the most beautiful chapters of horological history. Thanks to its unique blend of bold simplicity and formal purity, this watch has become one of the flagships of the Patek Philippe collection and most certainly one of its most instantly recognizable creations.

The elliptical design is based on the golden section, a ratio discovered more than two thousand years ago. It has intrigued philosophers and artists alike and is spontaneously perceived as visually agreeable and perfectly balanced.

As much as I like yellow gold I must admit the size of the 3738/100 is some kind of a bad side and it makes me hesitate a bit too much.

Therefore I think I would go with Paul and choose the 5738P while hoping they will release a yellow or rose gold version in the years to come.

I actually prefer the contrast of the white platinum with the blue dial instead of the yellow.

Besides Carl, dont forget the diamond that comes along with the platinum case.

I've actually forgot to mention it but you are right, I think that a platinum case looks better with the blue dial and band. Of course if this watch was available in yellow gold with that size and black or dark brown band and dial my pick would have probably been different but let's not speculate too much!

...And yes, you are right again, there's the diamond...don't we just love platinum?

Not in all cases, but in this case I believe I do.

I'll start the next thread later today or tommorrow.

Thank you again gentleman.

Oh no, thank you for offering us such a great opportunity to let our imagination run!

Looking forward to seeing the next one! I'm wondering what it will be (please don't say it, I want to have the surprise)!

The brown dial is pretty bad ass too

I've seen other older models with small seconds, but they don't do it for me.

Now is this a beautiful watch or what?

If only it was a tad bigger...

not that it matters but i'd skip this category. i think i need few more years and keep refining my taste to be able to fully apreciate this line. at the moment it is the ultimate grandpa watch to me.
