Stretch on band of Rolex watch not disclosed by seller on eBay

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted you opinion. I bought a 1973 Rolex Datejust from a seller from Japan. Everything checked out and it came with a Rolex certificate. My issue is that the seller didn't disclose the stretch on the band. I was cleaning the watch yesterday and one of the links broke in half. I took it to my jeweler and he said the band is really old and is on its last leg. It will cost $40 to remove the broken link and reattach and there is no guarantee that it won't break anyday. So I opted to replace the band with one from this brand called Spiedel.

I don't really want to return the watch to Japan. Should I contact the seller to ask for a partial refund? If so, what is a good amount? The watch plus shipping cost me $1,870.00 and the replacement band is probably about $50.00. The original band is basically useless, but of course I will keep it.

Any input will be much appreciated. Thanks!

hi, an original replacement band is more like $1000 new if steel, and at least $400 for a good used one, you do not state if the watch is steel or two tone, so i pressume its steel since you quote an aftermarket one is 50 dollars only and a two tone band even aftermarket is more than that due to the price of gold.

Thanks for your reply. I shouldn't say aftermarket, but a generic brand (Speidel). Anyway, I got desperate and had my jeweler install a generic band for me just so I can wear the Rolex watch. The seller reimbursed me $50 for my trouble. I didn't want to return the watch to Japan as I was afraid it would get lost in transit and I would be completely at a loss. A 1973 datejust two tone with generic band for around $1800 is not bad, right? It was serviced and in almost excellent condition.

That seems fair. Enjoy the watch and if ever you go for the real band, it will just make the watch more enjoyable.
