Update: Magnetism

I picked up my GMT yesterday, after it had been in to RSC for minor service and regulation. RSC had called me two weeks ago to tell me that my watch had been magnetized for the third straight time. And they were giving me feedback as to what I might have been doing to magnetize my watch. It turns out that I am the one creating the problem and causing the watch to go out of regulation. When I was younger back in the mid 1960's when I would buy a mechanical winding watch they would stop for no apparent reason. I would take the watch back to the store and get it replaced and again the watch would stop.
I was visiting my brother and his wife last week and found out that my older brother does not wear watches because they always stop when he puts them on. So for some reason, now I do not know why, we stop watches or in the case of my GMT...it goes out of whack and gains time and other days it loses time!!!
Take it easy.....Leo

Yes its possible even our own bodies put out a magnetic field in theory it states that any conductor that experiences a current running through it exhibits a magnetic field. Our own bodies can conduct electricity and they do so through neurons and muscles from small electrical impulses from the brain. The heart also generates electrical signals as well to power your heartbeat. So try something on the case back next to your skin it might solve your little problem

This is very interesting because every single thing I, or physicists, know about physics, says a person cannot become magnetised for any meaningful length of time. There's simply nothing in the human body that that could do this, and no, trace minerals or iron in the bloodstream are not enough.

If you run a current through a body it can create an electromagnetic field. Turn off the current & this field quickly dissipates.

I'd be looking more to environmental factors.

You have 16000 posts, so clearly you're really into watches. Were you without magnetisation problems between the 1960s and these latest issues?

Are you sure you're not trying to rationalise the purchase of a Milgauss?!

That's really unusual. People don't normally carry magnetism in their bodies, but if you and your brother have the same problem with wrist watches, it is very odd.

Here's a simple test:

Get a pocket size compass and orientate the pointer with N. Then place the compass right next to your wrist, (without wearing a watch) not on top, but next to it. If you see the pointer swing towards your wrist, you may be carry a magnetic current in you.

Do you have any surgical implant like a pacemaker?

If the problem persists, buy a model with a parachrom hairspring or better still a Milgauss.

Interesting. Do magnets stick to you? (kidding!). In all seriousness, I would think it is environmental. Good luck sorting out this mystery!!

Always knew you had a magnetic personality, Leo.

Getting a Milgauss is a terrific suggestion!

..... Good thing there is a solution. Do you want it with white dial, black dial, or better yet black dial with green crystal?

I would love another Rolex and really do like the Milgauss.....but seriously I have always had problems with wrist watches with the only one that I have not had a problem is with the Casio G-Shock which stores energy from the sun and artificial sources and resets itself daily from the Atomic Clock in Colorado. Previous watches I had which used batteries would stop working after a month or so and I would have to replace the battery quite often. And for a long time I just used the clock in my cell phones. Also my Dad had a 1957 Breitling Navitimer which always stopped working and was always at the jeweler for repairs. I am just going to buy a demagnetizer.....what brand should I buy???
Take it easy.....Leo

What do you do on a daily basis or living that causes interactions with possible strong magnets?

I knew someone like this. She could never wear mechanical watches; they would just stop.
I did not know why, until I read this thread.
